Michigan ice storm tonight

You will hear it on the news tomorrow...

I've personally heard a dozen major tree branches breaking off throughout this neighborhood.
A few smaller ones in my driveway with damage.
On neighbor's roof.
Everywhere.

At least twice there were some major "pops". Transformers going down nearby.

Things are rattling and rolling off my roof throughout this night as I type. To dark to see or do anything.
New branch fallen in the driveway.
Gonna take a walk around the neighborhood.

I normally park my car under a huge tree in front of my house. Went out and moved it a couple of hours ago after seeing the ice collecting on the branches. (This California boy still has a lot to learn about Michigan living )

Power outage map showing a huge chunk of south east MI with no power.
It might take a while to get all back on line with this weather.

Here, it was all snow, maybe 6 to 8 inches.

6-8” here, too.

Supposed to continue to snow all day, though.

The weather this year has been crazy. The snow and ice of the latest storm is going north of us fortunately. It's 63 degrees here at 8 AM, supposed to hit 73 this afternoon, then be 23 by midnight. This is the second time in 10 days that we've had 70 degree weather plummet to the 20s in one day.

It sure made the 8hp Tecumseh engine work hard this a.m.
It was like snow blowing a giant slushie.

We lost all the the mature trees in our yard a few years back due to an ice storm. The only tree that survived was badly damaged and is a bit lopsided. We had to three new trees.

Over 744,000 homes in Michigan without power from the ice storm last night.
Luckily the temps are around the low 30's. and not in single figures.

we've gotten about 14 inches of snow so far, another 2-3 on the way.

no issues to report. just a fair amount of shoveling. its too cold to be a real problem, its light and fluffy snow, not wet and heavy.

We had a freak snowfall in Portland OR yesterday afternoon through last night. Most weren’t expecting anything more than blowing flakes, but we got several inches of the heavy, wet stuff that turns into a wet ice rink when packed down by tires. Of course the city closed down. There is almost no snowplow capacity here, some areas are hilly, most don’t have snow tires, buses stuck all over, roads closed and even a bridge closed. People were caught at work, I heard of some over 6 hour trips home. I left the office when the drizzle first started turning into flakes, my commute is 10 minutes, by the time I got home the snow was coming down hard. Perfect time for a nap. Today the city is still basically shut down. Drove to the office to fetch something, AWD with snow tires, and was still slithering, sliding out, ABS kicking on, etc. I think it’ll be a “snow day” for the kids all week.

The largest outages by far were in Michigan, where at one point more than 820,000 customers were without electricity, mostly in the state’s southeast corner. Some 3,000 power lines were knocked down after being coated with ice as much as three-quarters of an inch thick and crews were struggling to get the juice back by the end of Sunday, utilities said.

Our 9yo kid - having only experienced northern New Mexico mountain winter (sun, snow and NO ICE!) got her mind blown when I talked about sledding on the (shiny) grass as a kid in SW Michigan now and then. Ice storms, when moderate at least, are such a pain in the rear for adults but so awesome for kids. No school. Everything's icy (see above sledding). And no school.

Now as an adult, and after 30y in CO and NM, I don't regret having not seen freezing rain in (hmmm...) over 30y.

This of course exceeded "moderate". I hope the electric's on soon for those peeps and not too many houses/cars got crunched...
