Fifth/First 356 Speedster Tru6

Just got back from Amelia where the car made its debut. It's the fifth Speedster made and the first production car, and the only one delivered in Terracotta paint. I was first contacted by the restoration shop, Road Scholars, in November to do all of the plating. They wanted everything in clear zinc but after some testing, I determined it was all clear cadmium plating. Then they wanted a certain look to it, like it would have been in 1954. That took a little testing because I had already done something similar for a 906 in the Collier Collection.

Then they wanted the bumperettes, which are aluminum, to be anodized. There was some debate as to whether the bumperettes should be bright or cloudy. Apparently, the earliest Speedsters were anodized resulting in a cloudy/satin finish. That took a lot of work to get right.

It took Best Porsche Car at Amelia on Sunday. Easily the most prestigious car I've been a part of.

Not great pics. If you go to Amelia and want to take pics, pay the extra money to get in early.

Clear cadmium processed for a specific look.

Bumperettes sanded and polished ready for final surface prep and anodizing.

Fun with sulfuric acid

That is AMAZING.

I worked a very large anodizing plant for a while. My hat is off to you. NOBODY preps aluminum like you did for a re-anodize job. I am very impressed. Congratulations!

I love that color on that car. Looks like all the hard work paid off

Shaun - congratulations! Well deserved - your perfectionist approach to all of your plating is obvious. I am looking forward to having you do my fan and housing when I finally pull the trigger on an engine rebuild.

CONGRATULATIONS, Shaun. Not just for doing this work on this car. Also for being the guy chosen to do cars like this.

BTW, every time someone admires my 911, I show them the fan and housing.

That was a great car in an otherwise slightly disappointing event. Thank you for putting it on the field.

Seems to me that Werks at 1/10th of the price was a better value

Congrats, Shaun - much to be proud of! Really.

And thanks for sharing - we have a lot of crazy threads - OK by me, BTW. Ones like this though really tug at the old car-guy heart strings.

I hope Patrick weighs in, as a longtime Speedster owner, hisself.

And FWIW, I don't mind having the spectators all around the car in your photos. I think it adds a bit of seasoning.

My 356 came without bumper horns. I have bought some used ones but they weren't nice chrome ones in good shape. I never did anything with them - still have them in a box.

The work you do though is just fascinating........it really is. Keep charging!

Amazing work Shaun.
How does one research and conclude such a nuance as the satin finish? Old pics?
also-
Awaiting the COPS video.
Thanks for sharing
