Deciphering classic tire sizes

I have a 1959 Edsel with BFG Silverotwn's Tire size is 8.00-14. I found a set of Silvertown's that are 7.50-14.

Am I correct that the 8.00 and 7.50 is the tread width and that the 7.50 are just slightly narrower at the tread, but the bead should still seat properly?

Thanks in advance for any information.

I don't believe it's tread width. But you're on the right track. Installed on the correct rim, it should be 8" at the girth or section.

7.5 is section width, widest point of tire in the sidewall. When on the specified width rim the section will be right at 7.5". Actual tread width will be about an inch less.

Difference between 7.5 and 8 shouldn't be a problem.
