Rolling Fork MS tornado

24 hours ago and about 65 miles away. Some of the poorest of the poor in Mississippi. Just devastating. What kind of wind does it take to blow over a modern water tower? I can't imagine being lofted into the air in a vehicle.

I'm a fairly courageous man but tornadoes scare the wits out of me. Having your town turned into a rubbish heap within minutes is...well...nightmare just doesn't seem adequate as a description.

Hearing people say "we're alive and we'll rebuild" just amazes me.

I hope they recover well.

It looks like an atomic bomb went off above there.

Tornadoes are scary and can be devastating, but in 2023 there are numerous advance warning systems. Almost anyone that wants one has a smart phone. With mine I am warned when lightning is within a few miles, and any thunderstorm, and multiple tornado watches or warnings. I can even watch the TV coverage live on my phone as they track precisely the rotating winds and damage. I can then take precautions in an informed way, and go to out tornado shelter if they are close.

We often know a week before hand that the conditions are ripe for a bad thunder storm system and rotating winds. That city was devastated, but it is a very small city and area. Look at what earthquakes do to a city, and the large cities can be flattened. Hurricanes wiped out New Orleans and Houston with flooding and it covered thousands of acres or many square miles.

There is no good natural disaster. They all suck, but flooding is the number one killer.
