Thank you for taking care of your friend.
You won't believe what it truly means unless you're in his boots.

Did the problem get figured out?

Well, nothing got figured out, really - I managed to serve a decent meal, and the oven remains as badly designed as it was.
Now we’re thinking about his dishwasher. It is very old and the upper rack is gone although the rollers for it are present. His caretaker washes the dishes using the lower rack, which works for her, but won’t work for my friend when he is able to be more self sufficient, because from his mobility scooter he can’t reach the lower rack. The hope is that his condition will improve so he is again able to cook and clean for himself, at least for part of the week, because having a caretaker come in 7 days a week is too expensive for him to keep up. We are going to try and find a replacement upper rack. My wife is down there this week and will try to do that. Failing that, I’m thinking of buying and having installed a “dish drawer” type of dishwasher, because he’d be able to reach and use the upper drawer, and his caretaker could of course use both drawers. Another friend has had Fagor dish drawers and likes them. Any experience with dish drawer dishwashers? Brand, model, etc?

He’s a long time friend, I’ve know him since we were all in our mid twenties and living in L.A.. He was a wheelchair racer then, employed, independent, completely self sufficient, with huge powerful arms and shoulders, chest and back. He’s had a terrible time of it in the last several years, spent the last two years bedridden and in and out of hospitals, getting increasingly isolated. My wife has been flying down and spending a week or so at a time in his house, trying to get his caretakers to cook healthy food and trying to keep his spirits up. I was encouraged to see him in his mobility scooter, but he can’t spend much time in it and needs help transferring from bed to/from scooter, basically he uses an overhead hoist with a sling - it’s quite an operation.
