i will have been up here 4 years late May and have asked many of the lifer folks that ive met up here & have become friends with when i will no longer be a "flat-lander". get differing answers depending on the current circumstance. ive asked if there is a test or something i can take to get signed off... i will often use an example of having figured out that collecting my dog's #2's early in the morning during the winter while they are still frozen is any indication of my worthiness....... |
^^^^ Times change :)... in the south it used to take 3-4 generations before the "...you ain't from around here" ceased ..... country folks :D.
I've been in my house 30 years now .... it was my rural boy scout camp in the early 70s .... and now it's turned into suburbia but my back fence is the city limits line and the old guy behind me still has a wooded oasis .... and my Lab swims in his pond several times each day ;). You've got a slice of paradise there! Enjoy.... |
You guys make me wonder if I'm "that neighbor..." I have string lights up around my back porch. They give off a little light but they're yellow not white and not super bright. A lot of people around here have them, though.
I'd like to think my neighbor would tell me if they bother him, but maybe not? |
Rig a flippen mirror so that when the offending light turns on, it reflect straight back into your neighbors window

don't be my neighbor Michael, shut them off at 1030-11... |
I live on a large salt water cove with houses on all sides. The neighbors (several) on the other side of the cove light it up over there like Times Square every night for no reason. All they're doing is lighting up the waterfront. No boats coming or going, just flood lights lighting their docks and lawns.
It aggravates me that the light pollution is ruining the night sky and the tranquility of the cove. I've thought about leaving a nice flyer or notice in some mailboxes to just make them aware of the unnecessary lights, and/or a letter to the editor of the local neighborhood rag, but I don't really want to be a PIA. I know it's a first world problem, but light pollution on the water is the worst. |
The fence post solar lights are the demise of natural night light.
neighbours beside me moved here from the city. They think it's nice to put one on every fence post, railing post and anywhere else they can think of. Makes me want to get my pellet gun out..... or move. |

being a bit forgetful I have had the same issue only in reverse. a neighbor mentioned a few times that my back light points at his porch and sometimes I forget it on.
I did turn it away and dont do it intentionally but sometimes Ill shine it up for a reaason , to see better in my own yard. I created a situation where he may have been internally upset about it and waiting to have a chance to speak to me politely. why not just be direct and polite at the same time, just ask if you can turn it off, he might not even mind if you change the fixture or the bulb or help install a motion light. one thing I did notice one day was that he had shone his light towards me.. he did it to tell me without a confrontation and when I noticed I redirected and shut mine off.. i never thought of it as any more than a signal.. I dont see him as trying to be mean or anything .. I think next time I see him Ill just say , if it ever bugs you feel free to walk in my yard and unscrew the bulb or redirect it or whatever, and yes you can point your light over as a signal and that s not insulting. Ive given him my phone number before but he's never called me. Im friendly ill take time to shoot the breeze if I see him around. I want to keep things friendly. with friendliness comes safety, so he can confront a stranger in your yard if he thinks something is off.. I had that with another neighbor who spotted some guy eyeing up my boat. He just stood and stared at the guy and he left.. I had a neighbor placing sticks and boards wiht nails in the alley, just outside his fence, to keep peole off his lawn maybe? or maybe it was an act of retaliation as i drove too close on his grass or something? I waited till I went to the dump and took all the stuff, it was a good way to resolve it, better than bickering. He put big rocks out another time I tokk those too. Its technically not his land. i had a girlfriend for a while she'd go over and kick his big rocks out of the way and he'd set them back again.. she had this thin with him.. after time I was just friendly to him and it seemed to just resolve itself. I dont give a hoot if a neighbor walks in my yard, I felt bad that he was bothered by it. your neighbor might be the same. I bet the light bugs you and it's not even on his mind.. try being nice and direct, forget about the favor you did. If you can make peace you are way better off. |

If you like to be up before dawn and done by noon, southern NV is doable 9 months out of the year. Good place to spend the rest of the day in a bar or casino and many do. |
we live in the city. hopefully this will make you feel better :)
neighbour (across the alley). hi intensity led - lighting up our house asked him if he could turn it out late at night. he complies. i buy him a nice 40 buck bottle of wine - in return. next day? light is back on. still on - 3 years later. other neighbour directly next door - the true nightmare? two rescue pit bulls from Texas. one of them has attacked me (twice) trying to get under the fence. had to put up a steel fence. now? death curdling yelps all day long ..... he also has a muffler-less Dodge Ram - backed in, pointing at our house. command start - doesn't even leave the house to start it. turns it off 20 or so minutes later - having never left the house. he also burns wood (illegal here). we cannot even open our windows. he sits out there until 11 pm 300 days/yr minimum, rain or shine - drinking- has a jack shack with a big exterior wall mounted 55" tv. and a bar. volume cranked up. his meat smoker also runs approximately 15 hrs/week. he is an oversized redneck - the entire 'hood is scared of him. what else? - he had it out with the neighbour for parking in front of his house. guy had a brand new black 7 series BMW. redneck waits until the car is parked in front of OUR house - proceeds to slather the car, end-to-end with mustard. i had noted the prick cooking sausages at 11 pm next to the jack shack - mustard in plain view. and - he is a city worker - somehow plays "hooky" - spends most of his day at home. and - he has an in with the city bylaw officers. the house was a recent purchase - we viewed it twice - both times the dogs were nowhere on the property - we would NEVER have proceeded otherwise. turn out the lady who owned our house was in cahoots with him. new (illegal) airBnb across the street? hi intensity led porch light on 24 hrs/day. i asked him if he could turn it off later in the evening - he laughed at me, drove away. now we have to keep our drapes closed at night. |
i actually came out of retirement - and work the weekends - 12 hour shifts - to retain a bit of sanity. grrrr
|
^^^holy crap. One week of that and I would be doing life without parole

you are all over the map there my man... the rest of my neighbors love me, a few are very good friends now, others im simply friendly with. even grumpy old Ron retired LEO who hates everyone shouts me out 1st when i see him at the coin op carwash or the post office. Micheal next door, the guy you don't want to be cause everyone hates you, universally. if you actually read some of my post I cover the previous communication with him on the subject, other examples of him being a crappy neighbor and i could add self-centered. |
Michael next door being like his middle name, Richard.... Kinda respect the play of his new sparkly orbs in the front yard, an excellent FU to me. solar as best as i can tell, low brightness, don't last all night, low enough they don't enter my 2nd floor master's quarters bedroom window...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1683170453.jpg the dance continues..... |
Seeing this picture the houses are much closer than I thought.
|
I see lots of rocks .... I would Ernest T. Bass those big azz eyesores in the middle of the street :D.

im the last place in the string of homes, the open expanse is to the other side of the property. |
There's a nearby street with small rental houses in a row (in a mostly residential area). Walk down the sidewalk and they light up one at a time. Bright.
Only thing missing is red carpet and my tux. Another has high intensity LEDs that trip when walking a quarter block away. Berlin wall. |
Update::: Had a few people over for a BBQ last friday night and my neighbor richard (Micheal) decides at about 630 to start in with weed whacking his edges of lawn, straps on the backpack blower, and then rides his mower around for 30 minutes or so. BBQ was apparent with a smokey stack and people yelling over the lawn equipment to hear one another.
One sober buddy and his now drunk wife had to leave a bit early, about 745 to pick up their kids. I suggested they lay on the horn as they drive by him on his ride on mower and they did. only drunk wife decided to flip him off, and as expected he flipped out. an ignored text 30 seconds later was followed by an AM phone call from old richard telling me he felt harassed on his own property by my guests. I won't go into how that went, but yada, yada, yada he and his wife are out of town and the lights are back on at night by timer. come on at about 845 and my gaming all night neighbor says they are going off at like 2AM. Thankfully I have an ambein script so I can sleep with the all the windows and shades open cause it's been as hot as hell here and that's how I cool the place down for the following day. so, i am giving up on the flashing beacon and am moving to LED "stadium" lights I will mount up on the top of the property to reach he and the mrs. master bedroom window. got 2 of them on amazon for a for about $200 and they will arrive tomorrow. let there be light richard! considering piling my collected dog do just on my property where he can see it when he runs the backpack blower ever couple days. i'd love to pellet gun a couple of his lights, but that would be a crime and he'd love seeing me get hooked up and hauled off... passive aggressive? you bet! |
