Think I torn a tendon on or around my knee

Did the Levi Bike ride this weekend like we did early for the past 7-8 years. Riding slowly to the registration, with stupid people walking ever slowly 2x2 hogging up the pathway to the building. I almost had to stop but decided to ride over the soil or grassy area to keep myself upright. Bam, I hit a 3" curb that was covered in soil/mud from the rain. I couldn't see it in the dark, damp, early morning. I go down on my right and hit my knee on the edge of the curb. I didn't get a chance to unclip. Thinking it is no big deal, it has happened to me before. I somehow twisted out of my pedals, and discovered I can't bend my leg at my knee. It was painful inside and not just pain on the skin which I scraped. I thought something was wrong but decided to ride it off because the fall was slower then walking pace. We hauled ass for two hours over about 2300' of rolling hills to stop at the 43 mile mark feed zone. I started to feel some discomfort on my knee as I rode off the saddle on the climbs. I got a ride back on the sag wagon, whild the boys rode on, saw a doctor at the finish line only to be informed that I may have torn a tendon. Friend got me an appointment with the ortho at 2 tomorrow. My knee, the area above the knee, my lower leg, calf and foot is now swollen up like a balloon. Been on anti-inflammatory pills for the past two days. I am so pissed.

Hopefully the ortho appointment will be good news...

Sorry to hear this. Like PWD72s said, hopefully tomorrow’s appointment will have good news.

Let me know if you need an Orthopedist. I’ve got a great one at St. Joseph’s in Burbank.

Good thing it's not your ACL.

Hopefully the anti deflammatories will let it settle down.

But, yep, that was bad luck.

Get an MRI. I completely severed my ACL and MCL 2 years ago in a ski accident, my wife tore a muscle in the back of her knee in an unrelated incident. The MRI is the only true way to know what’s going on and set the correct path to recovery (physio, surgery, or whatever else is needed). Your swelling sounds a lot like my wife 2 months ago…

Prior to our MRIs, the docs were just guessing and recommending the wrong treatment approach for each of us. She doesn’t need surgery, I did.

Full recovery for you both?

What was her treatment and did she tear a tendon?

That sucks. I wish you only the best and fastest recovery possible; I know what makes it worse is that you're just starting to get your fitness back for the summer and now you'll need to take time off, but you're still fit enough, smart enough and dedicated enough to return to strength. Imagine if you were a couch potato and this happened - you'd be facing a lifetime of chronic pain because you wouldn't have had the background to heal yourself up properly. Good luck, and keep us posted.

Ice is your friend in a deal like this.

Plain radiographs probably don't tell you much

Thanks,

I can't imagine being a couch potato. The thought of that will kills me. I read, but not sure hot true this is, bike riding or spinning pedals is one of the requirement of physical therapy.

Thank goodness one of the guys gone up with us is an E nT doc, so he called in favorite to his friend and got me in today. The ride back home from San Francisco was the worst.

She is still recovering. I had a full recovery and have skied a ton since (not allowed to jump anymore) but my ACL will fail prematurely due to fluid in the ‘hole’. When that happens I got operated on immediately to fix it.

Also get a cryocuff. This thing is amazing and I spent days (not hours) with this wrapped around my knee.

Doc can't tell me anything. Now, MRI is needed in the next day or two. Took an x ray but all she can tell me is my knee cap is elevated but she can't tell me anymore.
