Deadliest Jellyfish?

First I've ever heard of it. Perhaps our down under people have? Always thought it would be fun to dive on the great barrier reef. Now I'm not so sure.

Yeah, saw something on the telly about that. Horrible.

I love the great barrier reef, but I don't like the sound of these guys.

We have some of the deadliest animals on the planet here but thankfully injuries and death are relatively rare.

But don't be fooled. No one living here is completely comfortable with all of this.
A simple bush walk can turn into a full on emergency very quickly.

so, gazing at and sharing space with those gorgeous women I see ALL OVER your beaches comes with a potentially spendy bill?

Like papa said " listen boy, you may want to kill for a sexy woman, but you don't want to die for one".

Oz also has a deadly little bitty octopus. It is real cute, and very deadly.

Yep, a jellyfish the size of your fingernail can kill you. I saw a show about a guy that was diving and got stung. I don't remember the outcome. I assume he must have lived, but not sure. He was wearing a wetsuit. THe assumption was that there was a gap between the sleeves of the wetsuit and the gloves that he was wearing, and he got stung on that gap. And the assumption is that he was hit by an irukandji, because he didn't see it because the darn things are so small and practically invisible.

While their typical habitat is the warm Aussie waters, there exists some evidence the 'vicious' little buggers are believed to have spread as far north as Florida & the coasts of Japan & Great Britain. Not a pleasant thought.

Cheers

There is a large, very large jellyfish in the Puget Sound called a lions mane jelly.

it's huge.

While Wearing a full wet suit, scuba diving wife still got stung around exposed lips and face by her nose and mouth regulator.

getting out of the water, of course I had to pee on it to kill the sting.

My friend Heidi from Brisbane calls Australia "The land of things that bite you." And sting you too I guess.

One of the dogs stood on a jellyfish (blue bottle) on the beach and it stung his foot, so he lickked his foot. that nearly killed him.

Will Smith's character in Seven Pounds picked the jellyfish to end things for him.

they get pretty big.

The largest recorded specimen was measured off the coast of Massachusetts in 1865 and had a bell with a diameter of 210 centimetres (7 feet) and tentacles around 36.6 m (120 ft) long.
I wondered how that compared to a Portuguese Man-o-war. I know they can get long. They are usually 30' or less, but they can get tentacles as long as 100'. The top is much smaller. What I didn't know about them until very recently is that they aren't a jellyfish or even a single organism. They are a community of several different organisms.

Glad he recovered! I only recently found out that 1 They aren't a jellyfish and 2 they are actually a community of different organisms that come together and act like a single organism.

Even the sandflies in Aus are nastier than anywhere else.

Or as the pharmacist put it after a particularly unpleasant trip through upper Queensland - it’s not a bite, they piss on you, it’s irritating and you scratch which makes it worse. Of course since you are a POM even the sandflies want to piss on you more than anyone else here…
