DIY wood oven?

Has anyone built a wood fired oven, from bricks?

I have this fire pit and have long wished the “pit” were at waist height, as it’s hard to cook over an open fire kneeling on the ground, the smoke is in your face and the heat is radiating up to cook your hands. I do it, with goggles, welding gloves, and my longest tongs, but it is unpleasant and I stink of smoke after. The results are good but I never seem to be motivated to go through it more than twice a year.

I’d like to build a cylindrical tower, with the fire pit at the top and an oven below. Haven’t figured out where the chimney will go.

I did a refractory cement pizza oven a couple years back. Great idea, but keep in mind they take HOURS to get up to temp.

I would go to Masons Supply in SE. they may have kits for this. If not, they would have ideas and references for local people who do this.

Killer idea. I have similar desires.

I built an oven a few years ago, It worked well for a few years, but I think the perlite I use in the concrete wasn't up to the task, it didn't have the strength needed given its insulative properties.

I bought an Ooni.. (Kickstarter)

From what I’m reading, it seems to be matter of building arch shape forms, making a dome of firebrick, and building an outer shell of regular brick. Kind of like Michelangelo building the Duomo. But I’ve never done any masonry work.

A friend bought on of those kit set ones. Has all the fire bricks, cement and mortar, chimney included.

It works very well. Well designed as to how much air goes in the door, size and placement of the chimney. If someone else has done lots of trial and error designing something, it's often easiest to buy their setup.

Each time I read the title of the thread, I think, that is nuts, an oven made of wood is just a one time use bonfire.

The most feasible DIY oven building process on that forum, at my non-skill level, looks like the one where you make a big mound of sand in the shape of your oven cavity and the door and chimney opening, cover it with wet newspaper, and pack the appropriate reinforced concrete mix on top to make the dome. Then dig out the sand, and put other stuff over the concrete dome (stronger concrete, tiles, etc).

Be careful of that. Certain cement will take the heat, most will not and you'll have exploding chips of the interior in your pizza.

Yeah, that's what I did. Refractory cement and perlite. But it isn't really pretty when done. I'd either pay a mason or buy a forno if you really want to play.

Want to cook a single pizza at 500-600deg for 10-15min?

Spend the next 5hrs heating up the universe.

Might as well empty the ocean while you are at it.

But if cooking for 10-100 people...those seem quite efficient.
