Let's face it...odds not good.

Worked a couple of days at different tracks with Dudley Foster who was the pilot of Alvin when the Titanic first was discovered. I found it more interesting finding out how he went from an A4 pilot for the Navy to working for Woods Hole and learning to pilot a submersible.

What’s the advantage of having your ballast tanks a separate structure from that of the hull? Doesn’t matter if hull ruptured; at 12,500’ they’d be instantly incinerated and that’s quick.

Couldn't pay me anything to go down to crush depth to see an unsinkable ship on the ocean floor. Hell to the no. If it imploded, they were dead long before they got wet. But why didn't that noise get picked up by sonobuoys or other subs?

Given the depths and repeat single target:
No redundant wifi relay stations were sunk and no automatic status reports were sent about operation of the sub? There is something missing.

G'day!

Saw an interview tonight on Cuomo/News Nation that included a young lady who works with the English billionaire Hamish Harding on board. When asked what he was probably doing, assuming they are still alive and just in a spot of bother, she said he is probably methodically going through a process to try and resolve the problem(s).

Praying for a safe return, but it doesn't sound good.

Now in 993 land ...

A tourist trip to a watery grave of a thousand people AND calling the sub “Titan” … that has to be bad karma. Holy crap …

Scary but I'm trying to stay optimistic at this point.

I would guess that this little mishap effectively ends future tourist trips to the Titanic. Who'd want to take the trip now?
Seriously - no windows to look out of?

Kurt, there is a viewing port in the front of submersible. However visibility is limited to perhaps a dozen meters.
Venezianblau 87, the ballast are weights designed to be dropped if emergency ascent is required. Best Les

BBC has some very good info and a video inside the submersible, with updates:

Yes but the sub can't be opened from the inside. So, even if they're on the surface they could still suffocate if not found soon enough.

Wouldn’t such a vessel have basic tech that sends a ping every few seconds to aid rescuers?

If you watch this interview and listen carefully to what he is saying, the ridiculousness of the entire adventure is apparent. The little sub is almost flying blind, and has to maintain contact with the surface ship, which then gives them directions where to go. But the communication is spartan at best, little texts if that. If the ship loses contact, the mini sub has absolutely no idea where it is down there. It can be `00 meters from the Titanic but wouldn't know it.
One small hope is that it's actually surfaced and floating up top somewhere, and just is missing, but highly unlikely. |
