Ethanol Free Gas

Looks like the days of ethanol free premium fuel are gone for my area.

What are people doing for their power tools when every grade of gas has ethanol? Adding fuel stabilizers? Or just live with it?

I have a lot of small engines around, I don't mind paying as bit more to avoid trouble. Marinas have the right stuff, but they are not near me, and racetracks do too, but again, not near me.

Not sure what quantity you’re looking for but I’ve been buying pre-mix ethanol free gas from Home Depot for my string trimmer and back pack blower. It’s expensive, like $20/gallon but my property is small and I don’t use more than 1 per year.

It’s worth it knowing that I don’t have to worry about forgetting to winterize the equipment and it starts right up every spring.

^^^ I started doing the same with the gal cans a couple years ago.
It's amazing how much of a difference it makes in the spring start-up.

I use pre-mix for our chain saws that sit for months at a time. For the weed eater and leaf blower I buy 1 gallon of 93 octane and mix with the synthetic 2 stroke oil.

I don't have ethanol free within an hour of me, so for equipment that sits, there are cheap $15 carbs on ebay or amazon to replace cheaply instead.

If it's newer equipment I just use standard pump gas. They should have proper fuel lines, gaskets, etc. I have 10 year old equipment that still runs fine.

I always shut off the fuel supply, if possible and run it dry.

We still have ethanol free gas here. The gasohol is 25 cents per gallon cheaper, but I don't ever use it.

My Echo 2 cycle string trimmer is really old, and I had to replace the head not too long ago with the proper Echo branded parts. They changed the design, and it is "new and improved" and sucks big time now. Spend as much time fighting with the line feed as I do trimming.

I just broke down and bought the E-60 56 volt electric trimmer. Carbon fiber shaft, and it has a neat system to reload the line. Just start feeding it in until it comes out the other side, push a button and it self winds the line to the proper point. Get back to trimming.

So far I have only used it once, and it is different than my old trimmer in the way it trims. I will have to change my technique a bit. So far so good. It uses the same battery technology as my electric blower. The blower has a smaller battery as far as amp hours, but the batteries can be swapped back and forth.

So now I will be able to get rid of the last of the two cycle stuff.

My mower and walk behind edger are both 4 cycle.

I have an insane amount of edging and trimming. Just over 1/4 mile of concrete to grass edging with the walk behind edger. And the lots of trimming with the string trimmer along the fence line, and the 10 flowerbeds or tree rings.

So my real option, was embrace the new battery powered blowers and string trimmers.

Also I add Stabil to the tanks of gasoline before I fill them up, even though it is 100% gasoline. My edger is 28 year old. Still starts on the first pull.

Here in TN, pure gas is still readily available. It is getting far more expensive but to me its worth it. That said, I still use Stabil Marine treatment all the time and drain the tank at the end of the season and run the equipment dry.
I also run 93 octane no ethanol in the `87 Carrera since it was not built to handle the ethanol and it costs about a buck more a gallon. For the newer cars, regular 10% ethanol is just fine.

To answer your question, use Stabil (or some other treatment of your choice) and don't let the gas sit in the equipment for long periods of time.

This is so true. Don't even bother taking them apart.

Not a crime to empty them in the fall but if you forget there's a quick remedy

Not available in Harris County, as it is an EPA non-attainment zone. Waller County (30 miles away) has some stations with G100/E0 gas, but it is about 50 cents higher and only available in regular (89 Octane).

All of my equipment today is rated for E10.

Wow! I swear by ethanol free. Run it in everything that isn’t a car.

And...I don’t have issues like everyone else.

I would mourn the loss of this. (Or buy some avgas and cry about the cost)

@red-beard - All Buccees carry ethanol free fuel (high octane) in Harris County and there is a new P-66 gas station right by my office on Westheimer that does as well.

That's where all the hot rod guys fuel-up.

This is a decent web site to help find E-0 gas.
It's not very comprehensive though. Casey's sells 87 and 91 octane E-0 and none of their dozens of stores are listed.

Not sure about cleaners, but it still has lead in it.
