Going blind in right eye

Having gotten a new eye glass prescription recently, my optometrist was surprised my last visit was 5 years ago. Over that time a disease in my right eye, one which hadn't advanced in over 35 years, woke up and started to warp my cornea. Caught with regular visits, you get a new one with laser surgery. Apparently over 5 years it advanced enough such that surgery isn't an option she said. Went to an ophthalmologist today and he confirmed that it will ultimately go blind over the next year.

Moral to the story, see all of your doctors on a regular basis.

So sorry to hear this Shaun.

To your point, I had an eye exam just yesterday and was given a clean bill of health.

I wear contacts (near sighted) and it's state law here in Florida that an exam is required every 2 years in order to buy new contacts.

Praying for some type of resolve to your situation!

Wow, that's just terrible. I agree about the 2nd (third) opinion.

Yes. Turn up the volume on that second opinion. My MIL just had a second and third that saved her from unneeded back surgery.

Good luck!!!

I had a stroke in the eye. That's not the medical term, but a blood vessel broke and the top half of my eye is dark. I can see just to the focal point and below, nothing above. You can wave your arm above your head and I don't see anything. Just one eye or I'd have to wear a hard hat.

A few things, from someone who's son lost an eye and I will also be going in for cataract surgery after the hip stuff:

- The Wilmer Institute at Johns Hopkins is worth a visit. They did my son's eye and my MIL who had been told exactly what you have been: They will also do my eye. Worth the time and effort to do it. I can meet you there.

- Eye Protection or "eyepro" is essential, get in the habit now. You wear glasses so it will be easy. My son wears sunglasses with side protection as well as ballistically tolerant lens, esspecally when driving with the windows down.

- He kept his DL, so you'll be good.

- According to Jack, Chicks dig the eye patch. Proceed with caution

Best.

Man, I am so sorry to hear this. Completely irreversible, I suppose?

This hits kind of close to home for me. The vision in my right eye has deteriorated significantly in just the last year (I posted my own thread on this some time ago). I'm not facing anything close to what you are, Shaun, since mine is entirely "correctable". But talk about that proverbial "shot across the bow" - I now see my eye doctor far more regularly than I ever did in the past.

All the best, Shaun. Hang in there. I know that's easy to say...

That's not what you want to hear! Second and third opinion. If that eye is going to lose vision anyway, why not try the surgery even if low-odds?

Sorry to hear this Shaun. that's bad luck

The brain does adapt to having only one good eye. A friend lost an eye then after about a year his brain adapted to the new situation and he even got back into motorcycle sidecar racing.
