Happy 50th birthday, fellas.
Jesus just left Chicago on July 26, 1973.

I have seen them live several times. For the last 20 years any concert I go to I wear ear plugs to protect my hearing. The plugs come out to hear La Grange at the proper volume.
![]() Aa haw haw. Back 50 years ago, I bought my fist copy of Tres Hombres on quadraphonic 8 track. I wore that one out and quadraphonic had faded out, so I had to replace it with a standard 8 track copy. That died about the time I changed to cassette, so I bought the cassette version. That died in the heat of my car, so I finally figured out, buy the album, and make tapes as needed. Then CDs hit the market, and it was of course the first CD I ever bought. Just a little later the 6 pack was released on CD, so I have that as well. (Blazing Saddles is my first DVD) So I have bought Tres Hombres 6 times in 50 years. I still turn up La Grange when it gets played.

I was in junior high school when this was released. Like most kids, I was into the current music of my time. In retrospect, a lot of b.s. "top 40" teeny bopper nonsense. Then I bought Tres Hombres and brought it home to listen to it. It was so different... My dad even liked it, and asked me when I got interested in "the blues". I had no idea what he was talking about. "No dad, this is rock'n'roll." That's where my education started. I took off on a total deep dive into this thing he called "the blues". My life hasn't been the same since.

In the early days, R&R was simply blues played at a faster tempo. It pisses me off a little that Ken Burns has done long documentaries on American Jazz and Country, but not blues. Huh? Those are simply two branches of the truly original and American genre of Blues.
Tres Hombres was/is a killer album.

I love this album.
One thing I love about these songs are the stories of youth, beer, women, and cars. I met BFG at a hot rod show at the Pomona Fairgrounds. He was sitting at a table under a tent, no line, no fanfare, nuthing. It was surreal. I'm thinking, here is one of the greatest guitarist ever and you would not know it. I shook his hand and he signed my Tres Hombres CD case. I can listen to these songs over and over again.

I bought and still have their first two albums in vinyl when they first came out in '71 & '72, and that's all I have of their music, although I enjoy hearing their songs and have downloaded some into MP3 files for my digital library.
Cool thread...thanks, Herr Oberst! ![]()

I always wondered who owns the right to La Grange. I head those three notes and parts of the song used regularly in TV shows and movies. Billy Gibbons actually had a reoccurring role on a TV show called Bones. He played the rock star father of one of the main characters. He actually took off his trademark sunglasses, and had a closeup of his face and blue eyes. He was just on a few episodes, so just a minor part.
