Moving to Ft. Knox
23 years in Europe. I know the culture shock will be vicious. Talk to me about car culture, events, and what I might look forward to in the Ft. Knox / Louisville area. Make me feel better.

Hey Dru, sorry to hear it but at least you'll have great BBQ, so there's that.

Cars and Cappuccino

Louisville has some great Cuban restaurants. 2nd largest Cuban community outside of S. Florida. I've had some great Cuban meals and mojitos there.
As for car scene, give the Cuban connection, cobbled together 1950's Mercury's with boat motors for engines is probably the car scene. LOL. I really don't know the car scene, but they appear to have some Cars and Coffee gatherings. I'd start there: https://www.cqriverside.com/cars-coffee I guess some people will also mention the Derby. Not really that interesting to me. I have never been.

IIRC, Elizabethtown is closer to Ft Knox. Decent romcom with same name/same location.

Good luck Mr Dru. I'm sure the US is actually a whole lot better/safer etc than the MSM would have you believe!
- I'd recommend buying a big arse Cadillac SUV and a Cowboy hat (Made in the US only) about 5 minutes after arriving in country. ![]() Quote:

Louisville has lots of stuff at the state fairgrounds. Swap meets and car shows and the Street Rod Nationals (huge). Rodeo and other events. Also a drag strip not far away.

Don't panic. You'll be fine. A little humor, some interesting stories, and a dash of humility.
And welcome home. Dave. Last edited by thingmon; 07-19-2023 at 06:38 PM.. |

My son goes up to Louisville on occasion just to drink beer. Evidently a vibrant craft beer scene there.
Kentucky is actually a beautiful state (not as beautiful as Tennessee ![]() Wilkommen.

Kentucky is the home of many bourbon distilleries.
Louisville has the Kentucky Derby, if you are into horse racing.

Im from Louisville, and still visit family fairly often. Are you moving to live on Post or getting your own place? Ft Knox is not really in that great an area IMO. If you are willing to drive a little to work, I would recommend looking around Elizabeth Town or Bardstown area. Something east of Ft Knox. The southside and west end of Louisville is not the best the city has to offer. East of I-65 is where Id look. But Louisville has a lot to do, fantastic one-off restaurants, bourbon everywhere, lots of car clubs and Cars and Coffee, etc. In Bowling Green KY, you have one of the best road courses in the mid-west- NCM, right next to the National Corvette Museum. My favorite track. Elizabeth Town and Bardstown were sleepy little towns that are now very fast growing. Good places. PM me if you have any questions.

Well, you'll be an hour and a half from French Lick, 2 plus from Nashville.
Coin toss. If you are in the Army and don't want to go, why are you? Serious question.

Until the Houston Astrodome was built, it was the largest domed building on the planet. The art work and wow factor is astonishing. And they know how to draw a proper Guinness Stout. Just a really nice place.

I retired eraly because they wanted to send me to China Lake. I love China Lake but I had a successful wife at NAVAIR in Pa River and two happy kids in HS. I had also "geo-bached" for five years when the kids were growing up and I wasn't going to do that again. So I pulled chocks and retired. I could do three years at Fort Knox and never once complain.

![]() I am almost as shy as Jay Leno. I liked going down to the spectacular lobby there, grab a Guinness Stout draw, and just sit and watch the people come in to watch their reactions as they see the place. There is always someone to chat with. I met a retired physics professor and he was fun to talk to, as he had been retired for years, and just enjoying life, and traveling with his wife. I told him my mental image of a physics professor is a bit stodgy, and make civil engineers look like extroverts, because they look at other peoples shoes, not just their own. He was actually personable and funny.
