“Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs,” a statement released on his social page reads. “He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many,” the statement continued. No cause of death was released. The singer-songwriter was briefly hospitalized in May following a trip to the Bahamas. “I had to stop in Boston for a check-up but wound up back in the hospital to address some issues that needed immediate attention,” he told his followers in a social media post. Buffett posted a day later that he was soon headed home from the hospital, and thanked his followers for the “outpouring of support and well wishes.” He did not share what was ailing him, but said that he’d be going on a “fishing trip with old friends, along with paddling and sailing and get myself back in good shape” upon his return home from the hospital. ![]()

If you grew up in Florida during the '70's you knew all his songs.

Mid 80's concerts at Carowinds, countless coastal live acts playing covers and the crowd singalongs, incredible influence and memories. I had a feeling something was wrong when he cancelled his most recent tour.

Yeah, this one stings a bit. Not the hugest fan, but I grew to appreciate his humor and song writing skills after living in Florida as a young adult. My buddy named his own kids after Jimmy and his children. He is a true "parrot-head". And Kind of wild that Jimmy went before Warren (they're not related).

Seemed like a neat guy. I liked his light hearted lyrics and approach to life. RIP Jimmy.

And there's that one particular harbour
Sheltered from the wind Where the children play on the shore each day And all are safe within Most mysterious calling harbour So far but yet so near I can see the day when my hair's full gray And I finally disappear RIP Jimmy and thanks for the great tunes.

When the army took me to far away places, many of which I never wanted to be at, his music always reminded me of home.

I knew 2 of his songs and one was better that the other. 76 is fairly young but not for a musician. RIP.
The parrot heads are not happy. Like Dead and Co., I wonder what happens now. |

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4841610/ It deals with the fans and fringe musicians who play a JB style of music. HUGE following. I think it still may be on Netflix. I never had the chance to see him in concert. My Brother has seen him a few times and was hooked after the first concert.

I have lots of great memories of shows prior to the invasion of the drunken boomer crowds that would be ready to puke by the time he came on. Really loved his passion for the water and the Keys.
One Particular Harbour was pretty much an anthem for me back in my sailing days.

I was never his biggest fan but like anyone growing up in a beach community in the 70's-80's-90's I heard his music often in the summer months.
My biggest memory of Jimmy Buffet music was the weekend of August 29-31st 1997. Four of us headed into the Atlantic Ocean on an Ocean Yacht Sport Fish out of Cape May New Jersey at around three in the afternoon on Friday for a weekend of tuna fishing returning mid-day Sunday the 31st. We had one CD onboard, Son of a Son of a Sailor. For nearly forty-eight hours that CDplayed over and over and over again. It took years for me to be able to listen Cheeseburger in Paradise without cringing and Buffet in general as it would remind me of that trip. To top the weekend off when we arrived back at the dock Sunday afternoon, we got the news Princess Diana had been killed in a car accident. I never went fishing with those three guys again and only will go on overnights ever since. RIP Jimmy. Last edited by drcoastline; 09-02-2023 at 08:09 AM.. |

He left behind a lot of fans, including me. Never saw him live but got hooked on his early albums in the '70s before the whole "Cheeseburger in Paradise" or "Margaritaville" stuff. I like his more sensitive songs, which a lot of people do not know exist because of the radio stuff turns them off to the guy. I have a cousin who is a full-on Parrothead with her husband, they've seen him countless times.
His passing makes me feel old more than other rock and roll figures, (who are dropping like flies), maybe because of his wholesome image and supposed lifestyle? I don't know but I do know that he lived life to the max and he lived it his way, which is a lesson to all. If I had to guess, I would guess Melanoma from all of the sailing in Florida but it could have been anything. When certain cultural figures die, it's a real gut punch because when the culture that existed in your lifetime dies, it's like you are dying, a little at a time. RIP, JB. ![]()
