Scaled RC Truck Models!

Don't think I've ever seen a post here on Pelican about this group - USTE.
They've got an incredible yearly competition. These trucks are so realistic!

Fantastic and I'd bet some of those guys have spent more money on RC vehicles than the cost of a full size truck!

My boys are big into these RC crawlers. We watched a video this past weekend on one of the USTE expos. Wow.

Even the RTR (ready-to-run) stuff right out of the box is pretty cool. A pic from my son's adventure last Sunday (1/10th scale Axial):

We have an Axial Wrangler. Have some designs for the extra parts to 3d print to make an M35A2. Or Kamaz.

Traxxas kit that I helped build with my 12-year-old grandson. Locking diffs front and rear, two speed transmission.

I had an RC model of a dune buggy in high school way back in the 70's. It had a gas engine, of course. I always ran it fast, making jumps like in the Baja 1000. It was a lot of fun.

"Gas" (actually glow fuel) power is all but dead in everything R/C these days. I really miss it, it was a lot more fun than today's electric everything. Hat's off to the cleanliness and convenience of electric, but there is something about the smell of glow fuel, the sound, and all of that.

My youngest son and I raced R/C cars for years when he was about 8 to 14 years old. Electric cars indoors on carpet tracks in the winter, and "gas" cars outdoors in the summer.

Here are our Associated RC10's from about 20 years ago. Four wheel drive, two speed (centrifugal) transmissions, fully tunable suspensions. His was a fully class-legal 1/10 scale touring car, with a three port .12ci two cycle. Mine was a bit of an "outlaw", with a .26ci four cycle adapted from an airplane engine.

This class all but died in the five or six years we raced it. Everyone switched to electric, even for outdoor racing. Kind of a shame, really.

I had the Cox .049 Dune Buggy (not RC) when I was a kid. Wish I would have taken better care of it, they're worth a mint these days.

I didn't realize how big the RC hobby had gotten until Angelle Sampey raced a Pro Stock Drag Bike at NHRA national events sponsored by a company that made expansion chambers for RC cars.

I love them but I think i would get boored pretty quick with a slow rc. I was into rc back around 20 years ago. I have a gas savage but stoped when the local hobby shop closed up and had nowhere to buy fuel. I put way too much money into that thing. I think another shop has since opened on the other side of town. But i also have a little losi 4wd rc18mt electric truck thats alot of fun and a micro-t. The only time I get it out is a few times a year when an ice layer forms on top of fresh snow. Its absolutely awesome to drive around all the bumps and mounds and through the woods on it. Just have to watch out for holes from the deer prints and stuff. Anyway I guess a slow rock crawler wouldnt cost so much because it doesnt go fast enough to break stuff all the time.

All of the cars are gone, except for the Land Cruiser. Sold them when the local racing died. We had the two shown, their electric counterparts for winter indoor carpet racing, a couple of traditional 1/12 scale rear wheel drive foam tired "pan cars", and a couple of Tamiya F2001 F1 cars. Alex won the local F1 car championship one year, and we won the team championship. Good times.

Alex lost interest when he bought his 1968 912. He was only 15 years old. Had a blown motor, lots of rust. He used everything he learned in R/C car racing to rebuild that car and convert it to a 911 during his senior year of high school, using it as his mandatory year long project. He got an "A"...
