DaVinci Resolve by Black Magic.

https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve

The free version is always free and has more features than a lot of paid solutions.

The paid version at $295 is great deal when compared to something like Adobe Premiere which it competes well with.

Handbrake will do basic editing. I think it is still free.

It probably depends upon the OS (I'm assuming Windows, but which version). But I believe Windows comes with (and has since at least Win 7) a basic video editor.

I'm not aware of the editing capability of Handbrake, but yes, it's definitely free.

Having gone through this 3 years ago all I can say is be wise and stick to name brands. From what I ca see. all the video software is based on someone's open source program. It all works so similar that if you can use one, you can use the next. That makes included features very important as you don't get much for free. Just buy the Adobe and be done with it.

I wish I had. I use Wondershare Filmora.

Here's one I did of my puppy 12 years ago using Windows Movie Maker, that came with my system.

Is your friend trying to do videos like this - fairly simple - just some splicing, transitions, and music stuff?

Yes, very simple editing. Titles, cut, splice, combine video with audio tracks, basic transitions.

She's a volunteer with https://www.coldwaterbeechhouse.org/ which is a community non-profit in Michigan trying to restore an old disused building and turn it into a community center with classes like cooking (lots of people and kids need to learn to home cook). She is trying to make simple videos, including cooking but also other subjects. However, the volunteer group doesn't have much experience with video filming, video editing, social media, web design (as you can tell), etc and not much A/V equipment. Restoring the physical building is consuming the money right now, there's not budget for A/V or computers yet.

So she's working with a rather old laptop and also needs video editing software. I might have an older but still capable MacBook Pro to donate, but turns out she's a PC person, so I'm now thinking of finding or buying an adequate PC and donating it, with adequate video editing software installed.
