i do not.

craigster is saying definitively what a burn is, i am not defining what a burn is, merely saying what it isnt.

one is declarative, the other is not. a burn is not a greatful dead concert. that isnt defining what a burn is.

do you understand logic?

seems it is based upon the experiences of the "burners" to whom craigster spoke.

you wrote that it is different things to different people, so to them, that is what it is/was.

It is
What it is
To those
And them,
To each
Their own
It comes
From
Within.

see, this is declarative of the experience of a burn.

my statement is still not.

this is junior high level logic guys. lets keep it together and not trainwreck another thread based on failure to understand junior high logic. i can say a million sentences about what something isnt ... and thats not the same as a single sentence saying what something is. this is why the no true Scotsman fallacy exists and is so commonly used, because there are infinite statements available as to what something isnt. there are only a limited number of statements of what something is.

to the ones to whom craigster spoke, it was their experience. nobody said or inferred it was yours.

simple junior high logic here.

craigster was describing the entire event based on that experience that and making conclusions based on that. he did not say "this was these people's experiences, others could have been different, so im not going to draw any conclusions except about these people's experiences" he said "this was so and sos experience, so the whole event was like that, so im going to draw conclusions based on that"

this is a really dumb line of argument, i can't believe you guys keep harping on it.

you guys *really* want to figure out a way to make burning man into a concert or musical performance ... and its just not. like sorry. no reason to get mad at me about it.

There is an article by a columnist in the LA Times this morning written by an attendee. She seemed to describe a nice camping trip that ended up with some disappointment, but no real drama. Apparently the man didn't burn this year in spite of the rain stopping leaving one more day of the festival with a terrible mud problem. However, she said trucks had made it in to service the toilets before the last day.

She and her companions stayed on an extra day before driving their U-Haul out successfully.

Here is the first paragraph but the rest is behind a paywall and it's too long to copy here not to mention copyright.

By Sarah Enni
Sock, bag, sock : That’s the unlikely mantra that got me through Burning Man 2023, when heavy rains stranded tens of thousands of us in the Nevada desert. This was my sixth time going to this not-quite music festival, not-quite outdoor art exposition, not-quite social experiment (it’s all of that and more). I help lead a “theme camp,” which means I organize a group of campers and we build a shared space that all Burners can enjoy.

By sock, bag, sock, she was referring to the best way to navigate the mud. Put on a sock, then a plastic bag, and then another sock for traction. They used banners as clean walkways and by this method they were able to keep their personal areas fairly clean.

As I said, sounds like she went camping.

no. no we don't.
what is a really dumb line of argument is that out of 70K "burners" you can't believe that any of their experiences was akin to a Dead show or Buffet concert.
Nobody is saying that is what it is-- just that was their experience of what it is to *them*.
If you want to discount that since it is not your experience, then ce la vie.

No, Milt, you’re mistaken. The Man Burned Monday night because the people could not easily/safely GET to the Man on Saturday night.

The Temple burned on Tuesday night.

I attended The Burn in 2019 with a guy that has been deeply involved with it for nearly 20 years. I spoke to him on Wednesday and he said “As usual, it was fantastic. Sure, we got some rain, but nothing to complain about. Why? What did you hear?”

I told him, he laughed.

I’ll take his comments over someone’s online post/explanation/breakdown that’s meant for clicks.

And sure, my visit was a bit transformational, go back and read about my visit in the thread I started. It’s fairly thorough.

I’ve never once been to Sturgis…which means I’d never opine about that event.

I’m with CP on this. If anyone really wants to see what’s what, go and check it out.

If’n it ain’t for you, that’s cool. Just don’t siht on the whole thing. It’s not what the click-baiters say it is.

Apparently the writer didn't think enough of the burning to mention it.

all i have said is that a burn is a complex place where a lot of people are all having very different experiences. there are 70k people there, their experience cannot be summed up in a single word, or a single sentence or a single tiktok. a few social media posts by a couple of sparkle ponies who didnt know what they were getting into doesnt have any bearing on the 69,999 people who were there.

and anyone who thinks a single word or phrase can sum these things up ... is a moron. who not only lacks experience at burns, but also lacks basic life experience. as i said, even mountain climbers, and garden visitors take different things away from the experience, only a fool would think that almost any experience can be summed up in a single sentence or word or tikok. never mind something as complex as a burn.

the reason i used the term 'transformational experiences' is actually a well worded shot at sparkle ponies, again, something you might pick up on if you had even a basic understanding of what you are talking about. sparkle pony being another term you'd be familiar with if you were at all familiar with the event.
Boo hoo.

well said.

as media from this burn has come out ... yeah, it sounds like it was a great event.

remember, even when burning man happens without a hitch, the desert is still trying to kill you, in very unique ways. so personal discomfort is kinda part of the whole experience even at the best of times.

Turns out that even in a normal year, the injunction to “leave no trace” prompts attendees to dump filth by the road on their way out, while organizers still must spend weeks scrubbing the site in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert.

Real nice. But nothing different that what pigs do to the Lake Tahoe valley during a holiday weekend. Glad I saw most of CA before the last 2 decades of piggishness.
