Doesn't the wingman follow the plane in this sort of situation? Seems like the explanation for the transponder being turned off goes away for a solo flight

Battery fire? Has battery backup power

https://news.yahoo.com/ejected-pilot-crashed-f-35-011523688.html

The resident of the home, in North Charleston, first tells the dispatcher: “We got a pilot in the house, and I guess he landed in my backyard, and we’re trying to see if we could get an ambulance to the house, please."

The pilot then gets on the call to say: “Ma’am, a military jet crashed. I’m the pilot. We need to get rescue rolling. I’m not sure where the airplane is. It would have crash-landed somewhere. I ejected.”

Sounds like something out of Gomer Pyle USMC.

We should all hope it will be well understood and that the F-35 in all its variants (A, B, C, international sales) continues to maintain itself as the world’s premier front line fighter. At least if we want to enjoy the best possible level of freedom. To bet against it is expecting it is not superior to Russia’s and China’s counterparts.

Unconfirmed, but grapevine had the aircraft in IFR conditions, auto throttles and altitude hold. However until the investigation gathers the info, speculation is just that. And as I did not read through the entire thread, every accident is classified as a mishap in the military. In this case, due to the total value of loss, this is a Class A Mishap. The safety program has a graduate level education for those that investigate - they will find out what happened, whether mechanical, systems, physiological, or pilot error.
