So I have a 2016 Range Rover Sport diesel. 115k miles. Have done the belts (high pressure fuel pump and timing). Given the secondary market value I’m thinking of just keeping it. What is the source of the fuel pump failure? What is the preventive maintenance that could extend the life? Just preemptively replacing the pump Andy 150k? I like the car and am addicted to the torque.

Gaussian curve. Some run really good for a long time. Others do not. Some have designed weaknesses that turn the hpfp into a wear item. If one wants reliability. Get an injection pump diesel and don’t look back.

I can’t get my head around totaling a car over a mechanical problem. Time to head to the junkyard for an SBC?

Are you kidding? It happens all the time, my friend's very late model Audi SUV was totaled from rodents chewing the wiring under the hood. It would have required a complete wiring harness, which rivals the Space Shuttle on modern luxury vehicles.

No, I’m not kidding. Now you’re telling me in the 21st Century companies sell, and people buy, $50,000 cars that can be totaled by a mouse, that’s even harder to fathom.

Soy based wiring harnesses.
I know someone with a new GM who had a mouse cause 3k in damage. That’s 12% of the purchase price bc a mouse got under the bonnet. Cars aren’t made to last, 10-15 years are the service life on a 84 month loan. Merica’

You’re also looking at inflated dealer shop rate and full price on dealer parts.

More like $80k and a family of rats but yeah, that’s what I’m telling you. The wiring harness on those things is incredibly complex and it’s not like you can fix it with a few wire connectors from Radio Shack.

I should release a hoard of rats into my Cayenne's engine compartment, with cheese spread slathered all over the wires.
Hey, speeder, still want my car for a fun project? Save it from the junk yard.

If you want a Chevy engine, buy a Chevy. Which there is absolutely nothing wrong with.

In the diesel pickup world aftermarket lift pumps with additional filtering are a popular add on . The lift pump makes it easier for the main pump to do its job . And obviously additional filtering is a good idea .
Are these lift pumps/filters something that could benefit a Cayenne or Toureg ? Or are they different technologies ? Just seems like there has to be a solution besides totalling the vehicle or a 30k repair . Maybe not . |

If the hpfp has failed, how could it run "great" for half an hour before going into limp mode?

Update: I couldn't bring myself to send the Cayenne to the junkyard for their offer of $2500. Instead, I finally found a mechanic who works out of his house who agreed to do an engine swap. We found a wrecked 2013 in LA with 90,000 miles on it and bought the engine for $5K. The mechanic did the engine swap for $3500.
It's been running great for 2 months now. The old engine had 190,000 miles on it, so I essentially have a fairly low miles car now. I think I did the right thing. Hopefully, it'll last a long time.

Hopefully this one will last a long time. Is it possible to add lubricant or something to the fuel? Some synthetic two stroke oil should keep everything lubricated.
