I like the name "Cougar", but I guess it was already taken by then. Lol.

GM’s early marketing of the Camaro seemed to try to appeal to women. The name itself sounds soft and non-aggressive - unlike Mustang, Cougar, Javelin, Firebird, etc. I had a girlfriend who had a first year Camaro that was 6 cylinder automatic and peach colored with a peach-theme paisley vinyl roof.

You would have loved it.

Honestly, I would like it. I think a paisley top would be a cool period feature. Unlike Chrysler, GM never offered mod-tops, but there was nothing stopping dealers from installing them.

Or an incorrect usage of the word?

Ford had pretty good success with the ladies when selling the '64 Mustang. The link between 70s female ideal and Mustang was illustrated in TV shows like The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Charlie's Angles. (Probably not an exhaustive list, nor even likely statistically significant with respect to reality vs. television fantasy, but that is a connection I recall from the period.) That GM would go after the same market, even with obtusely subtle conflations of femininity and a car in their advertising, should be a given. In the US it was Ford vs. GM, and serious money was on the line.

Years later, Ford took a subliminal hard turn into the ditch will the unfortunate naming of their new Probe.

I'd never thought about it, but I suspect you're right. Not only is the Camaro song really bad, but it seems like the type of song people would think women enjoy.

Wait until I go to the next meeting and inform the guys they're driving girly cars. Haha

The first chord or two of the Camaro song had me thinking it was the Zombie's "She's not there", then it went very south. GM could have picked a catchier song but who knows what their budget was?

Cyrkle did Red Rubber Ball which is and awesome ditty.

Regarding marketing cars to women in the 1960s...

I think we need to remember that it wasn't until 1974 that a woman could open a bank account, or get a credit card, without written permission from her husband, father, or boss. And I bet a female getting a car loan was practically unheard of.

I'm sure the big three saw marketing to a group of people without direct access to money as unimportant.
