My dad's paternal side was supposed to be very German, as in my great grandparents, I think, (or great-great) were supposed to have spoken German. Dad's paternal family moved from Cincinnati to FL. I have a theory that dad's paternal side had some French in it, probably from the Alsace region. My surname doesn't, as far as I can tell, exist anywhere in the world except with me and my dad's half siblings and their families. I think the name was originally French, but got misspelled due to German pronunciation in Cincinnati. I have a decent amount of family tree from my dad's side, and I think all roads there lead to Germany.

The maternal side was from England, I think. My mom's has always told me that her side was from England and Scotland, but I believe the surname is from Ireland, and there was an American Indian only a few generations back.

I assume that if your ancestry is from Europe, there's probably a bit of a lot of folks in there.

When you get your ancestry checked via genetics, is that mostly maternal or a mix of both?
