Daylight Savings

What ever happened to the recent push to go with DST year round?
I hate this flip-flopping the clocks twice a year. I doubt it saves, money, energy, or my patience. Worse, I can't figure out how to reset my dog's clock. He's now running an hour early!

Does anyone like flipping between ST and DST?

I hate it like most people & wondered for years why we still have to have it. Deadbeat politicians.

That's it. We've got it 7.5-8 months of the year now, why not just keep it for the rest of the time. I'd rather have some afternoon daylight in the winter.

I believe the last time there was a push for it to be changed at the national level, half of the govt passed it and the rest either denied it or never got around to it or something.

I don't think farmers really care. They are going to get up and start working when they need to regardless of what the clock says.

The one argument that may still be valid is for school kids at bus stops. In Maine on the shortest day of the year, the sun rises at ~715am, and sets at ~4pm. That should hopefully put many/most kids at the bus stops with some light. If we kept DLS permanently, I assume that would put the kids in the dark in the mornings which probably isn't ideal.

But then I don't know bus schedules for school, and it can vary wildly from place to place. I think there are kids that can ride a school bus for an hour or more in places, and those kids are screwed no matter what assuming most schools still start around 8-830 and end 3-330.

In China, there's one time zone even thought the distance between the east and west ends of the country should dictate that there are 5 timezones. My understanding is that the main time zone is based on the coast with all of the big cities and that the rest of the country just does whatever works for them albeit with clocks that say stupid sheiße. It's kind of funny when you think about how advanced China was way back and how that is not so much the case now.

I love it. It puts normal business hours in the daylight hours. I love having daylight as late as 9:00pm in the summer.

It totally makes sense to do it.

Our dogs hate hate hate the fall back business, but they love love love the spring forward bit.

I couldn't get to sleep and watched TV till early morning, so this year it worked out. I'd like to see it eliminated.

Last week at my granddaughter's usual 7:40 bus time it was only just starting to get light. It is rural so the roads are dark.
I don't mind the change, my wife hates it. When she was teaching, she said the kids were struggling to adapt to the time change for about a week.

Kids get on the bus when it's lighter out.

The birds.

Can’t anyone think of the birds?

Twice a year their entire lives get disrupted. Why do we need to keep confusing them? It’s cruelty.

I remember when we went on emergency day light savings in 1973. We went to school in pitch black.

I don't like waking up in the dark. I don't mind watching sun up, but stone dark is not fun. This makes it better for me clockwise. It shouldn't matter what the clock says though.

I also tend to retire early and I don't like going to bed if there is any light out. Just get rid of DLST for me. You know, if people want more daylight in the summer evenings for pleasure, go to work at 6am during the longer days.

I like DST...but it's too long. Originally it was later on the start and sooner on the stop.(calendar)

Last week it was 8:30 am before it was light out, which is crazy.

If like, most people, they are working at a business with 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM office hours, that is pretty much impossible. One has to go to work when the business is open for business.

I got to an understanding with the boss that I could come in at 7:30 and work until 4:30 but I had keys to the building. He knew with no doubt, I could get more done in the morning when there were no interruptions for me from some employee wanting me to do their job for them. And I often came in at 7:00 AM just to get some rush jobs done and out of the way.

I've always loved daylight savings. the summertime aspect of it. I try to cram as much into my day as I can. In summertime start the working day early, and lots of playtime (surf, dogs, out and about) as soon as te workday finishes.

Winter is just a writeoff.

Not a fan.
In the middle of winter, year round dst would result in a sunrise at about 9:30 am.

With the work at home thing becoming almost a standard during the pandemic, and flexible hours at places like Google, who says 8 to 5 is even a thing now?

So many businesses open at other times. Harbor Freight at 10. Coffeed shops at 5am. Only time you need everyone there at the same time is an assembly line. Construction is like that (new construction) and they already start at 7. 4am in the summer in Vegas.

If the doctor doesn't want to come in before 9 others can. I know, there are many types of businesses like banks, auto repair, stores. Many of these places have a percentage of part time workers.

I think one of the main influences for setting DST is grade school. 8 to 5 is out of style. In fact, I think there is a poll out that says most Americans would rather work 4 10's if in a structured job time frame.

Drive down the street in an urban business area, and look at the businesses that are there. There are a LOT of brick and mortar businesses still around with 8 to 5 normal operating hours. There are around here at least. Work from home is fine if you are doing a service, but if you seel a widget, gizmo or perform a service that requires specialized equipment, you have regular business hours.

No doubt, lots of people no work from home. Heck I am one of them. 99% of our deliverable product is just electrons that we arrange in just the right way and send to our clients via our FTP site, or the client's FTP site. No physical thing is ever delivered, and we have naver laid eyes on many of our clients.

We still have an analog real physical airplane in a physical hangar, flown by a real human pilot, and all the expenses of that, but it is just a piece of equipment that we use to gather those electrons that make up digital aerial photos.

Yes, during the pandemic many businesses went full time work from home, but that is slowly going away, and most bigger companies are now back up to a minimum of 3 days in the office. I'm sure that there are some that are 5 days, and some may still be 2 days.

It's been so sweet for some of those workers that major tech companies -- who have spent billions of dollars making their campuses as state of the art and welcoming to employees as possible -- have had trouble convincing some employees to come back to the office.

In June, Google told employees that have not received official approval to work from home that they will have to spend at least three days a week in the office and stated that they will be tracking attendance via office badges as part of its employee performance reviews.
Absolutely, 8-5-ish is still a thing for the sorts of jobs that it has always been a thing (office jobs). Yes, retail jobs are often different, gas stations, Starbucks and donut places have probably never been 9-5 and still aren't. There may be some 7-4 or 9-6 but I think that's always been a thing.

I've got several buddies and ex-colleagues that are working places that are required to be anywhere from 3-5 days in the office.
