*** Official "Recommend a Book/Author" Thread ***
Please recommend good books or authors to your fellow Pelicans. I used to read a lot as a kid, and then never had time until recently. It seemed like work, projects, magazines and the internet got in the way.
With a long winter and recent knee replacement, I've had the time and read 28 books since August. I have 2 e-readers and reading programs on all my computers. A friend gave me 1,400 Ebooks to download and I can check out Ebooks from the Library. I read and enjoyed all John Grisham and Lee Child books. Loved "The Art of racing in rain". Just not sure where to go next? Thanks.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett. It is fiction based on fact about the Help hired by white people in the Deep South. Hugely entertaining. Could not put it down.

If you like fantasy there are few books as good as the "A Song of ice and fire" series by George RR Martin. Supposed to be 7 books, currently just the first 5 are out:
A Game of Thrones A Clash of Kings A Storm of Swords A Feast for Crows A Dance with Dragons Now being made into a TV series. Read the before watching it!!!! |

While it's not a work of fiction, Blind Man's Bluff is an amazing book - I literally couldn't put it down. If you have the slightest interest in Naval Military History or American Ingenuity, this will amaze you. But then, I'm into all that stuff and found John Craven's book incredible too. If you like that stuff, then try also Big Red, which is an account of a three month deterrance patrol on board a ballistic missile submarine.
For fiction, try Patrick Robinson for a decent potboiler.

Just finished Walter Isaakson's biography of Albert Einstein. Fantastic.
A few chapters into another great one. "The Emperor of All Maladies" by Siddhartha Mukherjee, MD. He's an Oncologist from Columbia University Med Center. It's essentially, a "biography" of cancer. Won a Pulitzer. An amazing and necessary read.
