You need to remember that he is a lifelong criminal. He has been doing this his whole adult life and would continue to do so if he had not been caught.
Sometimes jail is the best place for someone like this.
Maybe there he will find some type of goal in life. Religion, fitness, who knows, but maybe he needs direction to something.
Jails are there for rehabilitation, but they are also there to protect the public.

Sorry to hear of this. It is heart braking to hear about someone you thought you knew well turning out to be a bad shill. I very recently experienced a similar thing, though not quite of the same caliber. It's a long story but, to summarize, my nephew T, whom I add taken on as a second son (his dad was a pure con man that was never around much...unfortunately passed away at the young age of 49 so no longer a threat) and included him on many family trips (took him to Kauai with us 3 times and god knows how many RV trips!). Well we recently found out that he tried to con his 87 year old grandmother into selling her house (worth about $750K) to a third party (his GF's father) for 60% of the full value. This plan was conceived without any consultation with my wife or her brother. My MIL was all set to go through with it but she happened to mention it briefly in passing about 10 days ago to my wife. My wife, who holds the Power of Attorney over her estate, went absolutely livid! AND to make matters worse, we also found out that T's mother, D my wife's sister, was also IN ON IT! Thankfully D's fiance A (whom we trust), who is frequently out of town for work and was unaware of the whole situation, slapped (not physically) D around a bit to make her understand how AWFUL a deal this would have been for her mother! Both D and T have recently apologized so there is some progress in trying to get the family back together again. BUT still, we have now very much lost trust in the both of them....boggles my mind!
