Flouride Men

Have you ever been in a different area where the water out of a public fountain tastes like watered down fluoride?......Yech.

How do you get fluoride into your well system?
With mine, I don't think it would be possible...

Fluoride is a common mineral that occurs naturally and is released from rocks into the soil, water, and air. Rivers, lakes, and even the ocean naturally contain some fluoride, but usually not enough to prevent tooth decay.

Fluoride can be added to drinking water as a public health measure to reduce cavities.
Yes, I was aware that fluoride is toxic. I believe it's in very small doses the way that we get it, but I believe that's one of the reasons why you aren't supposed to swallow mouthwash and/or toothpaste.

Our water in Portland is not fluoridated.

When I moved here, first appointment at my dentist, she says "I can tell you didn't grow up here, your teeth are too good".

In the early 70's, I worked a summer job between college years at a city water management plant.
One of our jobs was to dump 30gal jugs of Fluoride into the water system for the city.

It was metered in to get the right mix.

As far as my home water well...it has no fluoride to mention.

I think the need for fluoride is passed. I think as a society we have progressed to the point where most kids are taught to brush their teeth. I don’t think my mother or grandmother ever brushed their teeth in their lives. I was only taught how when I got to school. Appalachians like my family live off of wells anyway so it isn’t doing them any good. I’m not against fluoride, I just think it has moved passed it’s usefulness.

Is it that it's fluoridated or that it's had chlorine put in it or that it's just passing through crappy public water system/pipes? How do you know what fluoride tastes like?

fluoride bonds into the enamel of teeth VERY quickly, and makes the enamel MUCH harder than it is by itself. I think that's probably very useful, especially today since darn near everything that we eat has tons of sugar/sweeteners in it. Sodas, coffee-drinks, energy drinks, etc... are probably all horrible for teeth.

I tihnk I've read somewhere that back in the day (I can't remember if it's 100 years ago or 70 or ...) most folks on average ate the equivalent of 2# of sugar per year, but that these days, that number has gone up to something ridiculous like 25#. (I can't remember the exact numbers).

I'm sure that dental health has probably improved over all, but I don't think that we're suddenly immune to cavities.

Growing up in the Florida panhandle I was always told that our water had natural fluoride in it, not sure if that was true or not but I remember my Dad telling me that but could explain why I have had very few cavities in my 58 years of existence.

As a kid in the late 50's, our home was on well water. Whenever we went to Grand Rapids or Muskegon, the water tasted funny and we were told it was from the recent water treatment.

Google...
"In 1945, Grand Rapids became the first city in the world to fluoridate its drinking water. The Grand Rapids water fluoridation study was originally sponsored by the U.S. Surgeon General, but was taken over by the NIDR shortly after the Institute's inception in 1948."

Fluoride is a mineral which in the presence of calcium and phosphate has the ability to remineralize tooth enamel. Small incipient caries (cavities) can actually reversed in this process.

As stated earlier, fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral in most drinking water. Many water districts will monitor this level daily and add fluoride to the water to reach the optimum 0.7 milligrams of fluoride per liter.

It is important to note that excessive fluoride is detrimental to a person. Consuming excessive amounts of fluoride from dental products or dietary supplements can cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, bone pain, and even death in rare cases. Getting too much fluoride over a long period of time can lead to a condition called skeletal fluorosis. In skeletal fluorosis the bones are generally weaker than normal with stiffness and pain in the joints as the early symptoms.

Orally, It can also produce dark and light stains on teeth if ingested during the developmental phase of a child’s life. Ironically the excessive exposure to fluoride can actually weaken teeth.

Despite the negative effects of excessive exposure to fluorine, the ADA recommends fluoridation of water in municipal water systems. Studies since the 1950s have revealed properly fluoridated water systems have reduced caries (cavities) by 25%.

I guess I wasn’t clear. I didn’t mean to say that we are immune to tooth decay. My point was with more people aware of dental health more people are getting fluoride from toothpaste and don’t need to have it in our water. I don’t mind it being in the water, I do wonder if anyone has studied modern dental care habits to see if we still need drinking water as a source.
