The engine rebuilding forum is truly screwed

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-engine-rebuilding-forum/

How does this even happen? Mass spamming of just one part of the BBS

Wouldn't all the forums be open to the same exploit?

Wow! You aren’t kidding. 4 1/2 pages of troll spam.

The spammers have a new technique which bypasses the usual dams in their way.

I'm not even sure how they do it, but I couldn't limit the damage either.

Generally mods rely on reports for the sub-forums, particularly if they aren't visited as often.

I'm sure we'll see a rise of this type of thing with AI bots. There have been a few that you really had to think whether they were human or not as they pull context from the thread itself to seem real.

I asked ChatGPT to respond to this comment: Here is what it would have posted as a bot:

"Yo, for real, what's up with the engine rebuilding forum on Pelican Parts? It's like someone hit the spam button on turbo mode or something. 🚗💨 How does this happen? Are all the forums on this site vulnerable to the same kind of exploit, or did the engine nerds just hit the jackpot for some reason? 🤔 #ForumDrama #SpamAttack"

Another board I go to every day has at least a dozen threads started by a new sign up within minutes and many never return. That isn't to say that AI hasn't evolved to responding at least once.

The owner/admin seems to not care. So what I think is that all the extra members (12 a day, or so) bring the total membership up. Now how would that affect advertising revenue?

This is how I see the game. And I now make it a point to look at the number of posts by a member before responding.

Just had a new post erased through "you need to log in again", and then "you've already logged in since then" error, and then back to the OT Forum Main Page.

Clicked back and forth but it was gone from the system. Didn't copy before submitting.

Sad because I put time and heart into it.
