A few years ago, I bought 3 pairs of Smartwool brand socks, I think at a Whole Earth Provisions or maybe someplace similar to REI. I think one pair was for skiing and another was for hiking and I forget the purpose for the third. One pair is a normal crew length sock but they are extra thick down around the feet. Another pair seems pretty thick everywhere and go nearly to the knees, and the third pair is more of an ordinary crew sock. They are all great socks in the winter. If it's REALLY cold and I'm just sitting on my rear (not creating any warmth through activity), then I'm probably most likely to wear the tall ones. Having the warm up the calves is nice in a really cold situation.

When it going to be really cold.. I wear two layers... a thin silk or coolmax sock, and then a heavier outer sock..That was for winters in rural Vermont.... and my feet were still cold... so.

Llama wool ski socks.
Then again, up until today when I got my air cast, I was wearing 1-2 hockey socks over my cast to cover up my toes… they got pretty chilly in the -40 feeding cows.

And what’s a good winter boot to cover the socks?

On very cold days, I also wear thin silk sock liners. Your feet sweat and that’s what makes them cold. The silk sock liners help to keep your feet from sweating as much…works for me but I’ve never lived in Vermont!

Most of my Smartwool socks are "zero padding," so I ordered some thicker ones, crew length or longer, which shipped yesterday. Besides warmth, good wool socks have other benefits. For example, I don't know how long it will take to wear out a pair of Smartwool socks but apparently that is a LOOOONG time.

I use these socks from Costco:
https://www.costco.com/avalanche-men's-ultimate-thermal-crew-sock%2c-3-pair.product.100829034.html And these insulated boots: https://chinookfootwear.com/products/copy-of-copy-of-rancher-tan?_pos=1&_sid=3f20f7624&_ss=r

Any merino wool sock will keep your feet warm. Plenty to choose from on Amazon. And if you are not having to wade through deep snow, I would suggest these Merrell waterproof ankle high hiking boots.
Merrell Men's Moab 3 Mid Waterproof Hiking Boot. $149 on Amazon. The above combination will keep your feet, toasty warm, even in our cold, Nebraska winter. Right now in Lincoln. It is -16°. And we’ve had about 18 inches of snow in the last week.

I like the Smartwools, but they're pricey.
For everyday, Weatherproof from costco. Not terribly thick but pretty darn warm and roughly 12 bucks or so for six pair.
