I see it shares something in common with the 911 engine - oil squirters to keep the pistons lubed and cool!

Wonder if they have problems with those head studs snapping?

I'd have to say......"WOW!" This engine would be a one-of-a-kind upgrade for the 911. It might not bolt up to a 915 tranny easily. Did someone tell those guys about the Dilivar head stud problem?

Aw come-on. It's not THAT much bigger then the 917 16 cylinder engine.

I wonder if they could boost the HP a bit by using a K&N filter?

How the hell did they measure the hp output of that engine?

I've lived in places smaller than those cylinders...

Someone check my math but that appears to be 4.27 hp/liter. Pretty high specific output, wouldn't you say?

Funny you post this here why you may ask ? well it happens that I work for this company for the last 7 years we are what they call "service engineers" we work on these babys day in and out a day like today Im working in a 380mm bore a much smaller scale but from the same family I have work on our 850mm series which is one below this one and yes nice to take a nap in the crankcase.

Tim they use a test bed,"a dyno like" must of the time is a generator and they measure the KW output.

Nice ha 9-10 months out of the year 14-16 hours a day not so nice after all

http://engines.rustyiron.com/vernon/

Years ago I worked on a crew that rebuilt these engines. Not as big, but close.
They were 8 cylinder, 3' bore and 2' stroke and they fired above and below the pistons which were water cooled along with the rods.
130,000 cu. in. displacement but nowhere near as much hp. Of course they only ran at 180 rpm. Oh, they were also german. Seems the US confiscated them after WWII.

Brings back memories and a sore back

My wife points out that the text claims the photos were taken in Japan but that the writing on the wall in this pic: http://www.pureluckdesign.com/other/rta96c/rta96c_cyldeck.jpg is clealy Korean. ???

Just found the Huell Howser video about the vernon diesels. the guy with the awesome comb-over giving the tour was my foreman back in the early 80's when we were rebuilding the engines.
And they were actually 167 rpm, not 180.
