Id like to share today's engine carnage with you .
2018 Grand Cherokee , 3.6 Pentastar gas motor .86,000 miles . Kid said he had a missfire, and took it in , they replaced all the coils and plugs, and it ran good for a few days, then , on the interstate on his way to work , with no notice, it let the smoke out .
He said he did not hear anything, just the engine quit and all the gauges lit up. All the rods were still on the crank and I almost had it started before I towed it into the shop . Im guessing it dropped a valve seat and went dowhill from there . I found a piece of piston laying on the front differential after I pulled the motor . Every once in a while , a good one comes in . Id also like to add that this was an ingorant pain in the buttox to remove . I hated 80% of this job, and I like motor work ![]() ![]()

Wow! That seems bad. One of those one in a million bad luck motors that grenade for no apparent reason?

Wow.
I've got a 3.6 powered Grand Cherokee. 180,000 and runs like new. Hope it keeps going. At least there is room to work with the 6-cylinder. The V8 Hemi really fills that space. |

That looks like a thankless job.....
![]() You remember Ivan, my mechanic, don't you, Fred? I dropped by to see him today. He got a couple stuck pistons out of 2 motorcycle calipers for me. He has a larger air compressor than I do. Took about 15 minutes and I gave him a couple twenties. Then we both sat at his desk and looked at Honda Interceptors on his laptop for another 20 minutes...... ![]()

Wow, I guess I forgot that Interceptors had inexpensive sliding calipers. I like to use the two socket method to twist out brake pistons when calipers are off. And what a mess of a Jeep engine!

Carnage indeed!
Wow. The driver had to have heard that orchestra. Interestingly enough, my neighbor recently replaced the same 3.6L Pentastar in his son's Cherokee. It was a b1tch of a job.

I recommend the young fellow book an appointment with an audiologist.
Are you shoving in a used engine? Best Les

Thank goodness for indy shops like yours Fred. I could not imagine how much they would charge at a stealership to do the same job. In the meantime my local indy shop had his leased building renovicted and is waiting for a city permit to get his new location started.

Wait, so engine work isn't like body work?
Were you not able to just buff this out? _

A mechanic also needs to be a bit of a psychologist...I can only imagine Fred breaking the news to the customer..

Fred, ever have trouble separating the engine from the trans ? I did a Chevy a month ago and ended up pulling the trans with the motor. Also ended up with 8 quarts of fluid on the floor. That truck beat me up.

Impossible for him to not hear carnage of that magnitude! I would bet that it didn’t sound right before and after its shop visit for ignition parts.

Reminds me of the demise of the engine in a VW camper I had while going to college. Driving along the freeway at 65 mph when the red lights lit up and I heard a squealing sound from the rear. I put in the clutch, I it started freewheeling - let the clutch out & the squealing started again - rear wheels locked up. I didnt' hear a sound before that episode. The engine had sucked a valve. It clattered around in the combustion chanber until it broke through the piston, and everything went into the crank area. No sound, and the inside of the engine looked similar to the one Fred shows.
