Dune: Part 2
This movie is why you go to the movies. And must be seen on IMAX. It was bigger and better in every way compared to the first Dune in 21. Whether or not you like the story/subject become immaterial, just pick an aspect of movie-making: cinematography, score, actors, effects, etc. and Dune 2 excelled in every one, in every way. It was gripping, engaging every moment in the 2:45 minute run time. If you liked the first one, you will love two. And definitely see it in IMAX. It's what a movie should be, Denis Villeneuve created a masterpiece with the 2.

I saw it on IMAX. Excellent. I had one major reservation about the first movie - that’s been more than addressed in the second. (It’s about Lady Jessica.) Highly recommended.

I’ve read the books many times, definitely in my top 10 sci-fi. This new series is seriously true to the books and I cant wait to see pt 2

What about the sound? The first one was absolutely PAINFUL to watch in the theater. I literally winced through the whole thing, and it made me hate the movie. The overall soundscape was not only so loud as to be physically dangerous, but the Zimmer score was so loud that we missed entire lines of the movie because the vocal track was many decibels lower than the music track.
Edit: There are reports across the planet supporting this, it wasn't just me being childish about it... |

It is a very loud movie Mike but one of things I liked about it, and Zimmer's score was perfect, to my ears and sensibilities anyway.
|
I had to rip up a napkin for makeshift earplugs.
It wasn’t that it was too loud but i have an intolerance to loud sharp noises like right now being at my MIL in FL who doesn’t believe in gravity and has to SLAM everything to make sure it stays in place and doesn’t float away. The woman can make a roll of paper towels sound like cannon fire. |
Which character in the movie is your MIL?

I haven't been to a rock concert in decades. I remember seeing Queen live at Irvine and it was good. Loud but just loud enough. Then I saw Springsteen at the L.A. Coliseum. We left at the encore because of L.A. traffic and I could hear the concert a block away. I think the outside is 200' tall; I can't find a reference. I know the field is 30 feet below street level and that's where the stage was. Fidelity at some place like that is nigh impossible. It seems to be all about the compressions in your chest. F that. |
I wonder if the sound varies by theater? I'm sensitive to loud noises (the sound in oppenheimer killed me) but I didn't have any problems with the sound in dune 1.
Then again I thought oppenheimer was a bad movie (hated everything except the main thesis) and I loved everything about dune 1. |
Theatre sound and concert sound is definitely an issue for me these days, thanks to my friend Mr. Tinnitus, and it doesn't help that for whatever strange reason, all acts, big and small, rock or folk or bluegrass feel the need to turn the dials to 11.
My rant is probably fodder for another thread. This thread is about Dune. I can't wait to see it, but now I know to bring earplugs. |

Or really any Seinfeld like sitcom that has Jewish moms from Da Bronx. |
I'm thinking Susie from Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Volume must vary by theater. I didn’t have any problem with the volume, saw it in an IMAX.

I loved Herbert's book, and will no doubt go back and read it again before I see another sci-fi "blockbuster" on the big screen. |
And 30 min of previews
|
I saw it at a lower tier theater we like to support yesterday.
Wow. When credits rolled I was shocked that 2 2/3 hours had passed. A pretty awesome film. I did think that they dumbed it down a touch and that Zendaya (sp) can’t act. But, I am a fan. Nicely done. |

I'll never forget the afternoon in 1984 when four of us went to see the premiere showing of Dune. Sting was the main reason we went...we were all Police fans. Walked out of the theater approx 3 hrs later shaking our heads. It was almost an impossible movie to understand. . |
