Unwatchable movies

I tried. I wanted to enjoy them. The problem is so many movies are just beyond bad.

I tried to watch The Fall Guy, Bikeriders, and Kingdom of Planet of the Apes, and couldn't make it past the first 30 minutes of any. I find that shocking. In my lifetime, the only movie I couldn't watch to the end was Sheena, Queen of the Jungle. Now, in just one year, I've seen three more movies that are unwatchable.

Why is that? Am I just older and more demanding? Is Hollywood dying at the hands of Netflix, Prime, and such? Did they shoot all the writers? Are the effects of Covid still haunting the studios?

Seriously, there's got to be at least one person here that can tell me why movies have gone to hell in 2024.

Not a new phenomenon.

Have tried and failed to make it through Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid several times. The godawful overbearing disco soundtrack ruins the movie. And even mute ther’s nothing that great about it.

More recently I have given up on Amazon’s Rings of Power. Slogged through the first season. But just couldn’t make it twenty minutes into the second. I am not a Tolkien purist. But this was just bad writing. Legend of the Seeker was better. And somebody in Hollywood is ripping off Bezos in a big way. The billion dollars does not appear on screen.

And I do not have “superhero fatigue”. I want to like those movies. But marvel is actively trying to drive me away.

IDK if it's 2024 per se but I think they've run out of stories to tell. Everything is sequel, prequel, origin story or just a re-telling of a previous story.

The fall guy wasn’t horrible. Just that everything about it could have been better.

My 'Continue Watching?' category on Netflix is the largest category.

I just watched "The Deliverance" on Netflix. I'd give it a 2 of 10 (pretty bad). They never really explained why the grandmother was white and her daughter and grandkids were black - I guess it was just the woke influence.

Movies that I/we couldn't watch to the end

Titanic, neither the missus nor myself watched the whole thing. We rented or borrow it on VHS. It was 2 tapes. We didn't put the second tape in.

I really expected this one to be good. An action movie with Antonio Banderas and Lucy Liu. It was horrible.
Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever

And so many folks here on the board love this one, that I bought it at Blockbuster for $4. I should have known. Yeah, lots of P-car content, but so boring. And the "chases" so lame. I think one of the chases was filmed at 25-35mph. Charlie Sheen. A rookie cop goes undercover to infiltrate a car theft ring.

If you like B-Sci-fi slashery comedy sort of movie with a little sexploitation (who doesn't), then cleanse your pallet of the movies listed above and watch

"Astonishing Tales of Terror: Rocktapussy!"

And if the sexploitation bothers you, the main actress has an impressive resume, and has a firm hand on exactly when/how she's exploited. And I think she was 45 when the movie was made.

When my friend and I saw Eraserhead back in the mid-80s, we were the only ones left in the theater halfway through.

Saw this a few years ago, just a few in the theater while seeing this automotive horror porn flick.

Once in a while somebody asks about the weirdest movie I’ve ever seen. I always say something along the lines of ‘You won’t get through it.’ Of course, that piques their interest. More than once, after having tried to watch it, the person got mad at me.

Eraserhead. The sound alone is unbearable.

I am trying to remember the last time I went to the movies. I think it was Toy Story 3

I usually can get through a flick. Fell asleep during Out of Africa. I have not read a bad book or seen a bad movie in a long time.

When Blockbuster was the thing, we'd go in there, look up and down the aisles, and take something home. One night it was Hider in the House (1989). It was so bad, we thought it was funny. For years we'd joke about watching Hider in the House as a bright idea for movie night.

I watched the first 15 minutes of the planet of the apes movie 3 times and that's all I could stay conscious for. Fall Guy sucked, and the bikeriders was not good either.

Not that long ago I enjoyed all sorts of movies. If they were well done then that was good enough.

Today it can be a real challenge to find something enjoyable. The last movie that did that for me was The Accountant (Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, J. K. Simmons - 2016).

And I don't know why! It's not Woke content because that's never bothered me.

I can certainly understand where you are coming from. 2016 seems like a million years ago now. When I saw it:

The Lobster
