The newer variable pace self-propelled mowers are a whole lot better than the older fixed speed self propelled mowers.
Makes it so easy.

My Honda lawnmower has many different speeds. From super fast walk, to so dang slow it hardly moves. My front yard has a 6 foot elevation change. So it is like walking up several flights of stairs for me. And lots and lots of turns, mowing around tree rings, and flower beds. My yard is mostly Bermuda grass, and I had to lower the blade again to get a lot of the dormant and dead grass bagged up to get sunshine to the roots to wake it up. Emptying the mower bag into the trash bags and hauling them to the curb is part of it.

For the rest of the summer I can mulch most of the yard, except right after I fertilize and it goes crazy growing and greening up. Then I bag it and put it in the compost. For an old geezer, it is a workout.

You do wrestle with them at the turnaround and the tight spots; the weight of the transmission is pretty noticeable, and power delivery can be pretty abrupt and herky-jerky. I eventually disconnected the whole shootin' match on the Toro for my small yard. For a big yard, I'm sure the drawbacks/benefits ratio is much less of an issue.

yeah i found that if i just walked forward it's smooth but if i try to actively manage speed it can be jerky.
