Opinions wanted -lotus Evora
Slip sliding away...
Lotus, Lola, Porsche, Gt40, and more are great cars! To the point - I have been on the hunt hard for a Purrfect Cayman 2nd gen, even with their genetic faults (bore score and a few others) Slowly, I have been slip sliding away...... looking at the brands . Committing apostasy. No, Not Ferrari or most any Italian finicky personalities, and should I say it ? No Not a BMW either. However, there is allowances for a few others and the Lotus keeps prying at my brain , or maybe heart? What is your opinion on the Lotus Evora ? if you have experience with them is some fashion? No not the old ones from the 70s ... Thanx

One of my sons friends has one. Very, very nice car. Toyota powered, so reliable. He's owned it a while and had no issues at all.

We had an Esprit and it was finicky but that goes back a couple of decades from the Evora. Now with Toyota power they should be dead reliable (powertrain anyway). On the Esprit we got a parts cross reference to fix other issues (for example, power window mechanisms were from a Chevy).
Good looking cars.

I think you should seriously consider that car....go drive it. My guess is you will be seriously impressed.

I've always felt like Loti are 'first glance' kinda cars. First glance you're like 'damn that is sweet' but then as you look at details what emerges is a thrown together kit car.
That said the idea that any mechanical issues would have you buying parts from Toyota.....hmmm might be a fantastic choice.

Owned an elise and exige s for a total of 12 years. Toyota powertrain and some parts bin bits.
Fantastic to drive cars, still a lot more interaction from the owner than a modern porsche to keep in tip top shape. Little things like Alarm, Hvac, plastic bits breaking, electrical gremlins are still very real for the brand. Depends on the owner, I would own one in a second, but won't be a hands off experience probably. I chose a 718 over an evora, even though i much more enthusiastic for modern lotus over modern porsche, mostly because my intention is to put a ton of miles on it and use more like a car than a toy. Cayman variants are fantastic cars, lotus makes more sense to me when there are no comparable cars like with the elise/exige.

my experience with lotus cars is the elises ... and they are amazing gokarts. can't get better really. like, amazing to drive.
the are however generally lacking in the being cars department. and its the little things, like the AC doesnt actually work well, the defrost, doesnt really work, etc etc. so when you try to use it as a car, which is most of the time, its not really a great experience. never experienced an evora though. |

I saw an Emira the other day and about crapped myself it was so sexy.
Sounded good too. I thought it was a ferrari from the front, looked a bit 918 from the back, but, oh my.... It looked awesome. It was running up in the mountains on a twisty perfect 2 lane road. Does it pan out like other lotuses? The Evora looks like a modern Elise, and it seems a bit go karty, but maybe it's not. I do hope the Emira is a more solid build than the Elises. I want one.

Emira and later Evoras are pretty much the same car, emira styling is perfect as far as I am concerned. A few locals have taken delivery and had several minor issues already.

I had a Evora pull in next to me at Amelia Island a few weeks ago. After he got out we chatted and he said he loved it. And so did others as it seemed as passers by took a lot of pictures of it. It turned some heads even with the other cars running around that day.

Guy parked next to me at a track day had one. His was the fancier, faster version, don't remember the exact spec. Beautiful car. IIRC he was having an issue with his aftermarket carbon fiber tipped exhaust melting, but no fault of the car. He said it's normally dead reliable and fairly comfortable.
He was faster than me. |

I looked up the model. Only 60 made? Is that right? Also non US legal. Maybe I got the wrong site.
I guess that was the GT430. And there seem to be U.S. only models. Never seen one that I know of. Last edited by Zeke; 03-28-2024 at 11:42 AM.. |

There are two Evoras for sale in Autotrader in Canada. Priced around $105k Cdn or about $70K US. I went to a British car show a couple of years ago. The owner said it was a great car. It did not have a for sale sign on it.....
![]() Yes they are beautiful cars. Not sure if they can be licensed in the US. |

The sacrilege is over, and I am all out of love for Lotus.
I have been researching the Evora and Emira and found out this. The rear clamshell does not tilt up like GT40!! To get at the* transverse engine. It has to be taken apart in pieces.!! So according to the tube channel I was watching, a clutch job became a 30-hour sojourn into crazy land . Where time is not of the essence, but Peter Pan and Tink live. Really atrocious engineering. If this time frame is even half of that, and pulling the body apart is ..this car is not for me. The liabilities for paint damage become enormous. *to work on the engine transmission, is pretty much a trip into the land of insanity. There is no room to drop it out from below. Pretty stupid. The thing is in there sideways, (transverse ) so one head is nowhere to be found on the V6. IDK if an H20 pump requires this much of disassembly,,,, but it all makes the Cayman look pretty forgiving. For sure Jimmy Clark's Lotus was not so cobbled up. Leave it to the Brits. MG Jag a U A wire Lucus Electric (Prince of Darkness ) PS If you do it yourselfers find this write up wrong, please do correct it and me.

There's a serviceable Lotus still being produced by Caterham. It may not check the sex-appeal or A/C boxes but it blacks out nearly all of the others.

I feel somewhat vindicated and a bit better about my negative comment on a happy subject.
