Those guys have sold some eye-watering beautiful and valuable cars. I think that Paul Zuckerman, (a Seinfeld buddy and Los Angeles attorney), bought the yellow 1600 Carrera coupe. He has a collection of 10.0 Porsches and BMWs and he drives them all.

^^^^ Porsche 911s have jumped the shark.
Recently, I’ve been looking at C2 Corvettes and MA amazed that some of the pricing is reasonable. |

$60k buys you a *who gives a schit* 911SC or 3.2 Carrera in average condition that we've all owned better examples of when they were $10-15k. This Corvette was a really special car, maybe not as much of a daily driver as an old 911 but 100x more desirable, at least to me. Oh don't get me wrong...I'd still buy another G-body 911 coupe if they were $20k for a really nice one. I like them but that's all they are worth to me. The people paying big $$ for them never owned one back when they were new and think that it's more of an experience than it is, or they are collectors who would buy Beanie Babies or pet rocks if they thought they were going up in value.

I agree. I'll never own another older 911 again. The driving experience just isn't worth it to me. My next 911 will be a 991. Preferably a 991.2 GT3 manual. I wanna drive the crap out of it and put as many miles on it as Glen has put on his Carrera. Chris Harris has 50K on his GT3 and says it's still the best car he's ever driven....

All I can say is that I should've bought the blue 993 that was offered here a few years ago.

The days of $20k anything air-cooled are long long gone. That ship left the dock eons ago and is now on high waters.
To play...you have to pay. And the admission price is huge. So many have said "I shoulda bought that XXX air cooled back when it was $10k or $20k"....well so many thought that air cooled cars were going to be bottom feeder on price forever. I'm glad I got in when I did (20-years ago) and so glad I did not sell my car, even though I had a few reasonable offers through the years. That $123k '80 SC is a clear sign of what people will pay for a very average car that many years ago we wouldn't take a second look at. The air cooleds now wear a Teflon suit against recession.

I have mixed emotions about BAT having bought and sold there.
Likes for buyers: The easy availability of quality classic, vintage, exotic and unusual cars and motorcycles, all in front of you without even having to put on pants. Likes for sellers: Immediate access to a global marketplace with potential buyers, many without financial limitations. And reliable, timely sale completion. Dislikes for buyers: As a greater percentage of quality vehicles are listed via BAT where you must compete with aforementioned buyers with no financial limitations, fewer such vehicles are available via traditional means. Dislikes for sellers: None that I can think of. Case-in-point…an auction I had hoped to bid on thinking it might be worth low $20k’s… https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1976-bmw-r90s-29/

There's no scenario where an SC is worth 50k to me, forget 100K. Having owned one for 20y, I told as much to a friend who was in the Market "they're nice and unkillable but a bit agricultural, you are expecting too much".. He bought one sight unseen in the 60s and sold it a month later, totally disappointed how rough the 915 was and how slow the car is nowadays.. LOL.. BAT is great to sell, not buy... That said, anyone got a project 356 for me ? ;-) It's not economical but it's the only way I can go on a diet, a project ;-) Last edited by Deschodt; 04-18-2024 at 10:20 AM.. |

Yeah, at 60K he rang the bell, but "low twenties" is insulting his time and effort if it is legitimate. Having spent a 1000 hours each on a couple of cars, it's believable to me. |

Fond memories of every air cooled Porsche I had...but as said before, the driving experience isn't worth the prices asked.

BaT has more eyeballs and more bidders, so hammer prices are higher. I've seen similar cars on PCarMarket or Cars & Bids sell for a little less. Maybe I'll hunt over there.
When lots of people bid, even the high mile 993s which would normally go for $60K would reach $80K. There's a $68K 993 in the PCA Mart but it's in Canada... |

The old air cooled 911 that I had was an '88 targa. I could see paying up to $40k for one (later 3.2L) in great shape with exactly the options that I wanted (excluding turbos which are 3.3L, and maybe the club sport and M491 since they'd fetch a bit of a premium over the standard cars). I feel like the driving experience of that was was worth that, especially if it was in top notch condition, full records, needs nothing, in the color and options that I'd want.
If I had FU money, then maybe things would be different. Obviously, if I was someone like Jerry Seinfeld, and I wanted an air cooled 3.2L car, my budget would be higher for the right car.

They already have, though on a different scale/starting point. Good 914 2.0 4-cylinder cars have risen probably 3-4x in value since 10 years ago, similar to 911SCs and 3.2 Carreras.
