Want to drive the Oregon Coast?

Leave your performance iron at home, because you'd quickly become frustrated. It's 2 lanes most of the way, and you'll constantly find yourself stuck behind slow moving tourism traffic. Very few passing areas.. But, if you're into scenery and like tourist trap communities...here you go. 36 minutes.

Should be a fun adventure

I did the coast hiway from Northern California to Port Angeles in Washington back in 1971. There were fewer recreational vehicles back then. It is a spectacular journey.

The perfect drive for something open and slow like a Bugeye Sprite. (You've got to time the weather just right though - the Oregon Coast can be chilly even in the summer)

I've done this drive more than once, and the only town I can't stand to be in is Lincoln City. Everything else is pretty charming - and don't miss the cheese factory at Tillamook.

(When I was a kid the operators of the Sea Lion Caves would wire a big cardboard sign onto the back bumper of every car that parked in their parking lot.)

Wow, I did that in about '73. VW bus at 55 MPH. Maybe 60. Did the Olympic Peninsula while I was up there. VW buses and logging trucks. Whew.

Drove it last July. Weekdays were no trouble at all.

We've done it twice.
Take a rain coat.
Tillamook has turned into a dairy theme park.
They built a cool new building.
Don't miss Newport for the seafood.

I did it on the Thursday before Memorial Day weekend last year in the BMW E12 I bought in Berkeley. No problems with slow traffic, and it was a terrific trip.

I did it twice in the late 1970s on a motorcycle. I have a crystal clear recollection of it, and that thought also reminds me how I felt at about 20 years old. (sigh)

Much like the Blue Ridge Parkway. Nice scenery, but a 35 or 45 MPH speed limit, and it gets boring real fast.

Done it several times over the years. Twice last year. Once on my motorcycle on a two week trip, then later in the car with my wife when driving back to LA from Seattle. Both times great trip. Getting Elephant Ears in seaside is something we've done since I was a kid. Mmmm

Like taking PCH from Morrow Bay to Monterey, the time you go is the key.

From stunning scenes to outrageous motorhome backup. Been there many times.

It plays at its own pace.

If you're doing Highway 1, then I also recommend taking a little detour up/down the Columbia River. go inland (either on the Washington or Oregon side), cross at Longview, go back. The drives along the river are equally gorgeous.

You gotta run up Mt Hood too.

Mt Hood is the opposite direction of the Longview/Rainier suggestion. Frankly, though, if you have the time, it's the better drive. Head east to Hood River (through the most scenic part of the Columbia Gorge) then hang a right. Mt hood is almost due south and, if you were the proverbial crow, is only about 25 miles away. Take the Government Camp/Rhododendron/Zigzag/Sandy route back into Portland, work your way back to Hwy 30, head to Astoria, hang a left and head down the coast.

If you are going up the Gorge to Hooterville, take a windsurfing rig and a couple different size sails. You could probably rent a board in Mt Hood, bring a wetsuit
