I am in desperate need for fashion advice

So my very good buddy is getting married and he asks me to officiate. I have a track record you see, 4 solid marriages and 0 broken ones. He likes the odds.

He tells me that the entire wedding party will be wearing suits.

SUITS! I think! I am more of a blazer and jeans guy. In fact, I haven't bought a suit for decades. Once upon a time? I wore a suit every day and still have a few old favorites in the closet. Simply because I have not been able to donate them.

So I pulled out my favorite of all time. Navy with pinstripes in a doublebreasted jacket. The pants fit at the waste but have a BIG 1990's cut with cuffs.

Mrs. LWJ is pretty thrifty and thought I should rock it. It looks great. Fits well. And is 30 years old or so.

I have 32 days to the event. Advice please.

(Also, if it helps, my buddy is NOT a fashionista.)

Other options: 1) Alter the pants to a more modern, fitted look. 2) Suck it up and simply buy a new suit. 3) Rent a suit. 4) wear a speedo and really make a statement.

We definitely need some 3 panel mirror pics of the suit!

jyl nailed it though, get the pants fitted for probably $50.

But no one will be looking at the suit if you have a killer tie. I used to be a serious clothes horse, I'd be happy to send out my tie collection. Have a Brioni, and others, that might work well with the suit.

^^^Way too easy. Might be the ticket. Do you have anyone you recommend for alterations? My blazer/jeans attire means I don't have anyone.

Buy a suit.

Have a look around shops that have guys clothes including suits, other than a serious suit shop.

Look for a two piece that is nice on the mannequin. Dark but not too dark, medium lapels, slim fit - jacket as well as pants. And remember you are going to a wedding NOT appearing in court or going to a funeral. These days great suits are not expensive.

Wear the vintage… FULL SEND!

Vintage is cool these days and since you are officiating, you need a convo starter anyway.

Wear speedo!

In reality, consider this.
Imagine you go in to get a new suit. It will most likely have to be altered.
Most of the high end clothing stores near me pharm out their work to local alterers, who take a week or so or more, especially if its during wedding/graduation season.

Imagine going into the same alterer with your pleated baggy cuffed 80-90's pants. They can pull them in. Easy peesy, but still the time lag.

I would find local alterer and get a timeline asap for getting something done. Take what you have in, and see what they can do. If they laugh at it, walk out, but that said- at least in my neck of the woods, the "high" end places, Brooks Bros. etc, will send you straight back to the same alterers. I'd go old school and make the vintage stuff fit, but that's just me. The new places are just gonna make you look like pee wee herman if you aren't careful.

Very high end clothiers will have their own fitters, but they are going to charge way more than a couple of bills- and you'll still have to check the lagtime.

You will probably find getting a more modern coat off the shelf a good solution for an initial fit, but a good set of wool pants will still need to be shortened.

Either way, the altering services are the important link here.

Buy a decent suit.
You are standing up in front of a bunch of people representing your friend.

Don’t look like you went through the thrift store to find an outfit, and a 90s double breasted screams I shop at the Salvation Army.

A new suit is like $200. For that nominal price you can show up looking dapper and debonair. Your friend will appreciate your effort to make the ceremony classy, your wife will be proud to be seen with you, and the guests won't confuse you with a hobo.
Seems like a no brainer to me.

You'd be surprised what you can rent. Not just formal wear but everyday suits.

Maybe Kid Rock can wear a pinstripe double breasted suit, but....

Or go back to the closet and get your 2nd choice.

IMHO I would be seeking advice from the bride/groom, instead of a group of car guys.

Now if you really want my advice, a driving suit is a suit, isn't it?

Don't forget a dress shirt is 30 to 50, and a nice tie is 25. Need shoes too.

Come to think of it, IDT I have a black belt anymore to go with my dark charcoal suit.

Zeke, come on man, you don't have one black extension cord?

Seriously though, listen to Dixie.

I have a few hundred nice silk ties, the Frank Lloyd Wright one is pretty boss. Sort of a shame I quit wearing ties

A $200 suit looks like… a $200 suit. There, I said it.

I’m the guy who didn’t buy a sports jacket until after he got a c-suite job. It’s more about substance than flashiness.

You officiated 4 weddings that turned out to be solid or you've had 4 solid marriages yourself?

Either way, your friend is at least somewhat superstitious, so wear something you wore at one of more of those weddings.

And if that turns out to be blazer and jeans, talk it over with him, and if he says do it, you should tell your wife to prepare her and oblige him without a second thought.

You could just send him the link to this thread and tell him to think about it for a coupla days and get back to you...
