				The Torque multiplier wrench

I first became aware of these during the rollout of the Carrera GT, all those years ago. Each CGT came with one in the tool roll, as it was needed to remove and install the centerlock wheels, which were torqued to a whopping 470 lb-ft of torque, and Porsche wisely decided that there might be times when an owner might need to get those wheels on and off away from a dealer.

(I found this image of the Porsche tool on Pistonheads. Not shown is the long breaker bar still needed to leverage that nut off.). ![]() Today, the guys at Torrque Test Channel tested a few and took a couple of them apart so a person can see what makes them multiply those many small torques into one big torque.

We used Snap-on torque multipliers in the bridge industry to tension some big ass bolts...

I have a couple of Williams brand, 1/2"-3/4" and 3/4"-1". I don't use them often, hard to find bolts that require that much torque.

We had a couple of these for tightening the flange bolts on the worlds largest titanium autoclave (in 1997] when I worked at Cominco’s R&D Center. Seems to me, my brother bought the big one at Boeing Surplus.

We also used these for tightening up completion tools at one of the downhole tool companies I worked at.

The rear axle nut on my 911 is some crazy high torque like 340 pound feet. I had a 3 foot long breaker bar wrench to get close, and I go to a local truck stop and have them use their 4 foot long torque wrench to get it just right. I give them 20 bucks for 60 seconds of work. Done. Is is cool technology.

I think my F250 has a nut on the rear end that takes an absolute enormous amount of torque.

Don’t have a multplier. Not buying one. That much force is dangerous and the doggone truck seems to fight back. |

My Turbo S came with a tool or socket for the wheel but not the wrench. I have to get it to someone to take that big thing out if I need to get the wheel out. I have no idea such wrench existed. I always thought the train or ship mechanic uses these huge torque wrenches. I learned aobut them in my high school autoshop. The instructor has a pretty big 3/4" torque wrench with a very long handle

I don’t have anything that requires a multiplier, but I have a 3/4” Torque wrench for the crankshaft bolt on my BMW 330….. ~300 ft/lbs. and they are one time use

![]() 70$ for this 3/4in torque adapter I "checked" its calibration in a vice with some dead weight on a breaker bar and it was right on. Those planetary drive things are cool, but 450ftlbs with a 3/4" breaker bar is pretty manageable, a short piece of cheap black oxide pipe as an extension depending on your strength. I do watch the torque test channel religiously, guy is hilarious and basically has my dream job.
