I’m looking for 1 week vacation ideas for mid September for my family (kids 11 and 14).
We are open to just about anything.

Are you planning on driving or flying?

Yellowstone is awesome and not too far.
Hawaii is always a hit Hiking in Utah may be too hot and your kids might complain. It’s on my list, everyone LOVES it. Costs Rica is amazing Thailand is amazing not sure about the weather in Sept. These are all family friendly ideas. And, while they could sound extravagant, you can do all of them pretty reasonably if you score cheap tickets. |

It all depends on what you and your kids like to do. If looking at wondrous and amazing natural sites, Yellowstone is had to beat. It is always crowded. My wife and I really enjoyed a week in Flagstaff, AZ as a home base. Easy to get to the Grand Canyon, an extinct volcano, Indian ruins and places like Oak Creek Canyon which is really pretty.

Wow, questions have stooped to a new low.

Family favorite for us as kids in the 80s and into adult life is Sanibel Island, Florida . Still is. Brother was there last week and post-hurricane is ok. Different and many things gone, but they had fun. This is not an exciting place…it’s relaxing and nature-centered. If you and/or your family/kids need constant excitement, probably not the place. It is however, very beautiful
About 25 years ago my boss asked me the same question. I said the same and he went with his family and loved it and couldn’t thank me enough.

One week I wouldn't burn 2 days flying unless you take the red eye. Where are you in CA? Eastern I think. I'd stay within a day's drive and make the trip out and back count as vacation days as well as travel days. Funny, I'd like to see Montreal again.

Sanibel, to me, is 'interesting' when there are 'spectacular' options out there. Worth a trip, but not on the same scale as the Grand Canyon.

Hawaii and Europe are on the table still. European cruises are CHEAP... We could do more than a week but my son starts High School this fall so it may not be a good idea for him to be gone more than a week at that time. I'm also losing a race against time where my kids will be at the age where hanging out with mom and dad isnt going to be 'cool' for much longer. If we do the Yellowstone / Moab trip, we would likely bring our dirtbikes to explore Moab.

Vacations usually boil down to two distinct types: Outdoorsy, where you spend a lot of time in nature and marvel at natural wonders and spectacular scenery, or where you have lots of things to do & see like historic locations, museums, grand architecture, great monuments, man-made wonders, sample new & interesting foods, etc.
I know you said that you aren't really 'city people', but for an entirely different kind of vacation experience, you might consider a trip to NYC. So much to do & see that it can be overwhelming at times, and the shear number and variety of available activities insure that both you and your family would be thoroughly entertained for the entire week. And you'll see lots of things that you've never seen before...

Been to the Grand Canyon and fell asleep. I’m good for an hour there on the way to some other place. No way would I ever go there on “vacation”.

My idea of vacation is Key West….tarpon fishing all morning, all afternoon sit at Schooner’s eating oysters and drinking rum. Then a few days exploring different keys and food and more fishing
