I work with the demographic this kid is heading toward. I call them the willfully poor and I maintain that I have not yet met a poor person who got poor by accident. It's a lifetime of cascading bad decisions. This kid is young enough to change his ways. Once he's mid- or late-career, he will never even think of changing and he will be permanently poor.
I meet people every day who live on nothing more than SS, smoke a pack a day and say, even though they really, really want life insurance, well, they're gonna wait. Wait for what? Until it's cheaper? They're richer? They change their lifestyle? Go back to work and make more money?

Unless you've got a good/close relationship with the kid, I wouldn't waste my breath on him.
If you had a relationship with the father, then you could tell him, but it doesn't sound like you are close with the family. Many/most young folks these days think they need stuff that they want. That's a problem.

When I was delivering money and time management programs to young people trying to enhance their job related skills, I was sobered by the number of them who had no idea of budgeting. There were a lot of opened eyes in those 6 hour workshops. I have no idea why we do not teach these skills in school.
The take out meals and coffee are likely the tip of the iceberg as far as spending habits for the young man in the o/p. He would have to have a complete change in attitude in order to improve his financial situation. I would take him aside once and point out how his spending habits are limiting his possibilities. If it was my business and if the kid was messing with it I'd give him a warning to knock it off or get terminated.

Advice, especially unsolicited...
Wise me don't need it, Fools never heed it. He might see examples or role models and change his ways. But a kid like that, if you're just talking at him, all he's gonna hear is "Blah blah, Boomer says this, Blah blah, Boomer says that."

I don't dislike him but I don't like him enough to really spill my gusts about life. He does his job but when done, he sits or plays with his phone but never ask if there's anything more he can do to help. Also, others are busy. I don't bust his ball on that.
I just might pull him aside and have a chit chat with him not about the complaining but how to save a few bucks and get a head start. He did tell me he wants to learn about the our industry so he can get involve in real estate. |

I have giving advice (gently) to younger people in the past but most of the time it fell of deaf ears.
That didn't stop me though.

I remember being given “unsolicited “ financial advise from senior co-workers when I was young and I also remember paying it forward to younger co-workers later on and was thankful and thanked later.

Many times, parents are telling junior the same thing at home but he doesn't listen until someone else says the same thing and junior realizes maybe dad might be onto something. The kid is indirectly related to a friend so a little good will to increase the class average isn't so terrible. Don't be pushy. DON'T use his job to pressure him! If he has to be let go, he'll claim it was because he didn't take your advice. Just be a friend to someone who needs a little wisdom from age.

It’s not your kid. Keep it zipped unless it’s affecting his job. Then give him something to actually complain about.

G'day!

Guess it shouldn't surprise me but some of the comments here are quite sad.
Maybe I'm just very fortunate to have had so many take the time to share their life philosophies with me during my youth. Lend a little advice - without the judgement BS. Something you might expect an adult to do. Someone with a generous heart and remembers what it was like...you know.....not having all the answers

I don’t think the kid needs advice. I think he has an attitude problem. No advice or sharing life philosophies is going to help. I have wasted a thousand hours trying to help such people. I still try and I am not sure why. I added up what I spent in the 35 years I smoked…..conservative calculation is $160,000 up in smoke. If I had invested all of that money every day I would be wealthy. For years I ate pizza slices twice a day so I could feed that habit while earning very little…..much less than $22/hour. I didn’t walk around the office complaining and moaning about how hard it was to get ahead. Instead I worked hard and made moves to climb upwards while living in a 10 x 10 room that costs $1,300 a month, paying student loans etc and leaving me with a whopping $80 a month in walking around money.
The only advice this kid needs is to learn how to be thankful for the opportunity he has been given or else start over and I suspect saying so with result in him responding with a big F you At the end of the day, the OP is paying the guy to do a job, not to infect the workplace with his poor attitude and commentary about how his poor choices have left him disadvantage in a dog eat dog world I will say Baz, your the nicest guy on the internet and I admire that

I am with BAZ on this one too. Some old dude has given me some advice and I listened to almost every single one of them. I used some of them to a couple of younger punks on my payroll years ago.
