Brain trust question about Gmail
One of my wife's friends uses Gmail as her email client. She was OK for a while, but all of a sudden she is getting hundreds of spam emails per day.
Is there a spam blocker in Google's own email? If not, is there a spam blocker she can download and setup. I have never had a google email and I know nothing about Gmail. I use Outlook on our own domain's email, and it has only a few spams that are not sent to the spam folder automatically. Any help?

I'm no expert, but have been using GeeMale since it's inception.... for all of it's downsides ... The built-in/auto detect > spam folder aspect has always been excellent .... superb actually.
They know stuff .... and use it ... ![]() Good luck .... no help here ![]() |

Does she use Gmail via a web browser? Or is she using Outlook, Thunderbird, or something similar on her PC to read Gmail?
If the latter then she needs to stop syncing the spam folder. |

Gmail has an excellent SPAM filter built right in. It's automatic.
Some stuff will get through from time to time, or the bad guys will figure out how to get around the filter, and you'll get a flood for a bit, but then google will figure it out and then it'll drop back down again. I've got an old Gmail account (not as old as KC though) and I get very little SPAM. I do occasionally get these emails these days with very little text that purport to be from someone warning me about something on some account or trying to sell me something, but they are always pretty obvious. ![]() ![]()

Good point. Gmail still receives the SPAM mail and gives the user the opportunity to review it. The SPAM goes into the SPAM folder that is visible if you login to the Gmail website. I've never had any app (Windows or Mac) download the mail out of the SPAM folder, but I'm sure that's possible.

I think, but will verify, she just uses her phone to read email. I will know more tomorrow.

If she is using the google-published gmail app on her phone then she shouldn't see a lot of spam (unless it's missing the gmail spam filter).
If she's using another app for mail then it's possible it's syncing the spam folder. A coworker had that trouble using the standard Samsung mail app. I've also had my gmail account a long time (back when you could only get one by invitation) and I've never had more than 2-3 spam messages leak into the inbox on a single day. |

As others have said, use either the browser or the Google-supplied Gmail app for her phone OS. Otherwise, most other apps will treat all emails as regular emails.
That or she accidentally changed a setting if it was working previously... |

As others have said, gmail's spam detection is very good. I have used it as my personal email for a long long time and it is also the email platform we use at work.
