What’s your internet speed? I’ve been getting gypped!

We’re getting about 75 Mbps downloads on average which I thought was fast even though we’ve been experiencing issues while streaming movies. Went camping a couple of weeks ago where there’s typically no cell signal. We had to rent a Starlink dish because we couldn’t be unreachable during the trip. Starlink was giving us almost 200 Mbps which I thought was impossible to a non-land line service like ATT that we have at home. I started shopping around immediately and discovered that we were getting gypped by ATT.

We pay $85/mo for 100 Mbps but was really getting less. Also, there are other services that can provide up to 1 Gbps for only $65/mo! I called ATT to see if they can at least match that and they said no. Needless to say, bye bye ATT.

What’s your speed and your cost?

T-mobile Internet (5G cell service) it varies because we are in BFE, but we get anywhere from 30-300mb, usually in the 50-100mb range $50/mo and unlimited data.

Rural Michigan. AT&T is our only option. 10mbps. Yes, TEN. $85 a month and we just got an email yesterday that the rate is going up to $90. This is the fourth rate increase in the last 9 months. And that is the fastest speed available. I don't stream movies often but when I do I have to do it in the evening.

Sprint was the only cell company with service out here. They got bought up and they shut the towers down so we have to go outside in the driveway to get 1 Verizon bar. Haven't found the need to get the equipment to get a stronger signal to do wifi internet.

Umm, that is slow. I'm getting better than that and I live at a small beachtown (topless girls, swaying palm trees...) in the South Pacific.

Comcast here...248.5 down and 23.5 up
It's bundled with cable and phone, so I'm not sure of the internet price.

Just swaying pond plants and turtles here.

I don’t know if there is a difference between an iPhone and a laptop doing the testing but here are my results.

Doesn’t look anything like I am paying $91 a month for.

I never really noticed how fast my internet was because I’m mostly just reading and writing emails.

I don’t stream movies (the wife does all the time -Christmas Chick Flicks -painful)

. . . based on my test I shouldn’t have anything to complain about.

[begin monologue] I'll be the naysayer this time, reminding everyone that Speedtest is not a true measure of your internet capability because it's sending data configured quite different than your streaming needs, and that your purchased internet capability is not SPEED, but VOLUME, and that testing the raw speed isn't as important is testing how fast you can download several data sources at once, which is a better indicator of your VOLUME flow, and that unless you're trying to FTP a multi-gig file, the actual speed isn't that important to you, as long as you are not under sampling the stream you're streaming.[/end monologue]

At work, there are only a few cars in the parking lot.... The FIRN connection is our "slow" one... but I'd have to fiddle w/ my local settings to get my connection to go out the "fast" side ....

On this laptop through WiFi, about 600MBps down and 40 up. On my PC which has a hardwired connection, it will nearly max out around 950-960 Mbps and 40 up. I have a 1Gbps network so getting a higher speed internet connection is useless.

My Wifi is a Netgear Mesh Network on WiFi 6.
