LOL!
I've heard of them. I think they are the modern version of Zima and/or Bartles & Jaymes. Thank you for your support! ![]()

Several years ago there was an article (in Forbes, I think) about the evolution of California Cooler wine coolers. It was a pretty interesting look at the evolution of a small business that started as just a couple of guys from Lodi making a wine based punch for their parent's backyard BBQs. It evolved from there and was ultimately bought out by Gallo - who owned the Bartels and James brand.
The original California Cooler was actually wine based, and like most thing gone corporate, ultimately devolved into a malt based beverage which took the quality way down. Compared to the original California Cooler, White Claw (and all the derivatives) sucks. California Cooler was originally sold in plastic 2 liter bottles. A friend of a friend, underaged at the time, convinced his mom to regularly buy it for him on grocery store trips, unaware that it contained alcohol. I'll see if I can find that article.

I don't think this is the exact article I remember, but it tracks about the same and is an interesting history of the wine cooler.

Sun Country was also sold in 2 liter bottles
Then of course the Bartyles and James and "Seeeagrams...golden wine coolers, Seeeegrams...golden wine coolers" as sung by this spokesperson ![]()

Does anyone recall some kind of beverage called Purple Passion? I used to see it sold in convenience stores, and it was in 2 liter bottles. Never tried it but had my fair share of Bartles and James. You could go by McDonald's and get a large cup of ice with a lid and straw and pour your wine coolers into that and no one knew what you were drinking. We used to premix coke and Bacardi 151 in coke bottles and go to the high-school football games on Friday nights and get hammered.

THey aren't much different than cheap beer. Water with bubbles and a little (not much) flavor.

Not in over 30 years... From what I remember about them (which isn't much, have probably had fewer than 5) they are the cheap beer equivalent of fresca or 7up.
