Shot for his Rolex

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/ex-mlb-star-rips-san-francisco-after-nfl-player-shot-in-attempted-robbery-absolute-hell-hole/ar-AA1pOAIG?ocid=BingNewsSerp

"Former MLB star Mark Mulder ripped the city of San Francisco on Saturday after 49ers rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was wounded in a shooting during a robbery attempt.

The shooting occurred in the Union Square area of the city. Pearsall was reportedly shot by a 17-year-old who tried stealing his Rolex. Pearsall was shot in the chest, but the bullet exited his body without hitting any vital organs, according to his mother, Erin."

Hmmm...any moral here? Perhaps it's hoping you're not drafted to play for the 49ers?
Maybe don't buy a Rolex?

I wear Rolexes all the time, and I often work in the ghetto. The only comment I've ever gotten from someone was from a man with severe dementia in a near vegetative state. But he was obviously a watch guy back in the day and complimented me on my choice. Otherwise, they're invisible to all but watch nerds.

You can still wear all the Bling you want in Las Vegas. Certain folks don't like the image tarnished.

Unfortunately, this is becoming a "thing". In Europe, this term is "Rolex Rippers".

https://luxurylaunches.com/watches/why-jim-ratcliffe-wont-wear-a-watch.php

Most of the time you are safe in your "natural habitat". Aka, the well-off places in your city.

But go to "Times Square" or other tourist areas and you are likely to be targeted. Usually, it is not broad daylight. Situational awareness is very important.

What a shame. Glad we got to see SF before.

The moral is in the article:

"What an absolute hell hole of a city!" he wrote on X. "The mentally ill Libs will still tell you how beautiful it is all while they get mugged and step in s---."

Just went on a 3 week trip to UK/Ireland. I left the Rolex at home and wore my Tissot Chronometer to avoid any possible "extra" attention.

Remember those rumors from the 1980s of people getting their arms chainsawed off in Miami for their Rolexes?

A guy destroys his car in a bad wreck and when the cop gets there, the guy’s sitting on the side of the road, shaking his head saying, “my BMW, my BMW”! The cop says, “what, are you crazy?…you’re worried about your car? You’re missing your left arm”! The guy looks at it and says, “my Rolex, my Rolex”!

It's San Francisco...no different now than Detroit. Run by the Dems and crime is out of control- despite their assurances crime is down. The only thing down is people actually stopped calling the cops because they will not come or not take a report and if they ever do, the DA will not prosecute. What could go wrong?

Reading the watch forums it seems Rolex is universally recognized as quick easy cash for thieves. Other brands not so much. I would imagine it's the sub and GMT's that are so easy to spot.

I didn't read the article, but it seems to me more likely that the kid was going to mug him "give your wallet, phone, and watch", but not necessarily targeted because of his watch. Or it is possible, if this guy was a sports figure, that the guy had some very flashy version of the watch, gold, diamonds, whatever that might be an issue more than the more "pedestrian" versions that are just stainless.

"Pearsall was released from the hospital on Sunday. The 23-year-old had been walking alone shortly after 3:30 p.m. local time when a suspect tried to rob him with a gun in the Union Square area, according to officials. San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott said that more than one shot was fired.

"A struggle between Mr. Pearsall and the suspect ensued, and gunfire from the suspect’s gun struck both Mr. Pearsall and the subject."

The gun allegedly belonged to the suspect and was recovered. Scott said investigators believe the teen acted alone, adding that there was no indication that Pearsall had been targeted because he’s a football player.

"This is how we hold people accountable in San Francisco. Robberies and any violence like this will not be tolerated in our city, San Francisco Mayor London Breed said at a news conference later Saturday."

Robberies happen in the nice parts of towns. We just had one the other day here where a guy had his watch taken at gunpoint in broad daylight in the outdoor tables in front of the Beverly Wilshire hotel on the corner of Wilshire and Rodeo in Beverly Hills. The victim was targeted for his 6-figure watch and the robbery was over so quickly that other people sitting around him did not even know it happened. The Beverly Wilshire hotel is famous for many things including being the setting for the film, "Pretty Woman" with Richard Gere and Julia Roberts.

Not sure where some of you live but Rodeo Drive in BH is about as high rent as it gets in the USA and BH in general is policed like few places on earth...it's actually known for being "over policed." Not exactly a "defund the police" place.

The point is that crime is a real problem but also people wearing hundreds of thousands of dollars on their bodies are huge targets for robbers...it's like walking around in the lion's den with a pork chop around your neck. Not very smart.

Ahhh, so it's his own fault. Everyone knows nothing good happens after 3:00 p.m.

And he's also a defenseless NFL player - he shouldn't have been by himself!

??

I don't think the article or myself were trying to place blame. I believe the point is to provide details/facts about the incident.

"Bob was robbed on Tuesday"
which is super light on details
vs
"Bob was in X location, at Y time, with Z people"
which would be a list of facts/details
vs
"Bob got what he deserved for going to a crack house while wearing a diamond encrusted gold Rolex at 3am"
which would be victim blaming.

Had mine snatched off my arm right through the car window, on River Road, in the middle of the night, in uptown New Orleans. Never saw the dude coming. It was over before it began, and by the time I collected my wits, it was too late to do anything about it. Of course I called the police from my car to report it (1986 BTW), but didn't want to hang around to wait for an officer. I considered it a lesson learned, and have since never worn anything of value on my wrist when I know I could be looked ta as a target. I've also never had another Rolex, as a small part of me carries the superstition that the watch itself caused me to be robbed.
