Another close call at the track…

Last spring, I had an oil cooler line break and had a close call with the wall at pit out, at Roebling Road.

This weekend, I’m at Carolina Motorsports Park and on the back straight. right after the kink, something let loose again and I almost went for a ride.

I turned off the engine, pulled off into the grass and I got towed into the pits. A power steering coupling broke. I removed the power steering pulley and went to the FLAPS to get a shorter belt. I’m back on the track, but it’s definitely a work out with no power steering.

Can somebody embed the video. I can’t do it on my iPhone

Rocket,

You posted a picture of a broken E46 trailing arm - same car? How did that happen? Asking because I have an E46.

The broken trailing arm was just a random picture. Not my car.

You did great with a bad situation. Instinct kicked in, and your hands and feet knew what to do.

Roebling road is a fun and easy track, Just down the straight, and make a right and then is it just sweeper, after sweeper, and back the front straight. There is basically zero elevation change.

On my first session I had an instructor, mostly to show the the visual cues to aim for the apexes. And I came around the last corner to get on the straight, I drifted across the track in a nice 4 well drift, and got two wheels off track. I just carefully and slowly turned enough to get back on track and my instructor said well done. He let me run the rest of the day by myself and in the next faster group.

It was HOT that day. The heat index got to 135. I drank a case of water and managed to pee once just a little. I was really happy to be done and get in my air conditioned car and go back to the hotel.

If you ever get the urge to try a really super fun track go to Missouri International track. It is basically a 4 mile long track through the forest, with 1,200 feet of elevation change. Constant up and downs and endless curves. There is no real straight. The roller coaster is a blast, down a steep hill and my old 3.2 screams up to redline in third like it has a turbo, hit the bottom of the hill, and back up the next hill in 4th. Lift at the top of the hill to keep it planted on the ground, over the crest and wind it up.

I liked it more than Laquna Seca.

Turn 11 today. The steering wheel was faster than I was. 🤪

I had a close call coming into the kink at CMP in 2023, but it was in the form of a deer that decided to run across the track right in front of me...

Maybe if I held on the steering wheel, it would’ve helped! 😂

It spun so hard and fast I lost my grip and didn’t have a chance. What doesn’t help, is I have a tendency to shuffle steer instead of holding my hands on the wheel and turning it.

LMAO! THat's a great video, where the navigator is reaming the driver.

"Sammy, you have to listen to my calls. Please, I beg you."
