New Toyota Supra......I don't get it.
When new cars come out, the first place one sees them is on the internet. And cars can look ungainly in photos, but when you are physically in the cars space, it makes sense. As you walk around the car, the styling makes more sense then what a photo can provide. (the Cayman comes to mind).
I spent a lot of time walking around a couple of the new Supras that showed up at cars and coffee today. I am mystified. W. T. F. is the back end of this car supposed to be? Why does the line above the windows not follow the curve of the roof line? If its supposed to be related to some to other line in the design, ok, but what line is that? The rear haunches of this cars, are simply bizarre. Its look like it has a full diaper hanging off its ass. There is a edge line that runs from the front wheel well, back to the door handle...then abruptly ends as it runs into the seemingly arbitrary free hand curve that makes up the rear fenders. Also, a BMW drivetrain under the body? Are BMWs as reliable as Toyota's these days? IMHO, this is incredibly unattractive car. Please explain what I am missing. ![]()

On the new Supras, admittingly they look a lot better in the metal than in pictures. I am pleased that Toyota decided to put this car into production (esp. with declining BRZ sales) with a real third pedal and the good stuff (straight six with turbos..even though its BMW's) for us car guys we are fortunate as this market segment is shrinking and new offerings are limited. So we are fortunate, as Toyota and all our fav. car manufacturers focus on trucks, SUVs and mini-vans.
Going back 20+ years, nothing can beat the mighty MkIV Supra...period.

The automakers claim no one is buying sports cars and sports coupes anymore so they're going to drop them from their line up. Can they not make the connection? Cars have gotten down right ugly in the last 20 years (with a few exceptions). Sports car styling can be bold but that doesn't mean repulsive.
Produce something that lights some passion and desire - build it and they will come. Is there anyone on this board who works for the these companies? Are you listening?

However, I do not know a single person in my children's wide range of friends that drives a sports car: A few four door sports sedan's (oxymoron alert) but not a single two seater in the bunch. Lots of small SUVs, Jeeps, trucks and, more trucks ![]() It is a lifestyle thing: They are all active, some married with children, others with big hobbies and love the utility of small SUVs and trucks. That and many just aren't into cars at all.

Seahawk nailed it..
I JUST BOUGHT A 2021 A91 EDITION!! The car is amazing to drive. Insanely fast great steering feel and not to harsh of a suspension. Yes it's a Toyota/bmw but ALL TUNING was done by Toyota. For $55000 what other car can compete? Styling isn't for everyone but it looks like nothing else on the road right now. If you look at the mk4 and compare it to the new mk5 supra Toyota actually took alot of styling cues for the 90s model. I personal love the way it looks other then the fake vents. The Cayman is a pretty boring looking car plus comes with a way higher price tag. The bmw m2 is a good looking car but also a way steeper price tag. For the money I don't think you can bet the new Supra. Just curious what age you guys are? I'm 45 in I think the new Supra is meant to attract a younger audience. |

![]() Too funny!!! I DON'T THINK THIS CAR WAS BUILT FOR GUYS THAT WERE ALIVE DURNING THE JURSASIC PERIOD...JK A car styling a eye of the beholder type of think..just because I find it sexy doesn't mean everyone will or should. It would be a pretty boring world.. |

I think that the styling is weird. I'm as old as KC but I still like new designs that I see, if they are good. I hated certain things when I was young. Don't think it's changed w age.
You could take a Prius or a Corolla in a dark color and tint/black everything out and it would look "badass" like the car pictured above...shading will hide a lot of aesthetic sins. It's like putting a black dress and stockings on an ugly chick and posing her in front of a black wall in a dark nightclub...badass!! ![]() Beauty, of course, is always in the eye of the beer holder. Young or old. Don't bring ageism into it. ![]()

I actually like the styling, it’s aggressive and distinctly Japanese. What lets me down is that it’s a BMW in Toyota clothing, a total fraud. I also find it hard to believe that this one will have the same legacy as a bulletproof platform for tuning that made the 1990s Supra a legend. It also seems like a letdown for $55k, there are a few cars that are much more appealing at that price point.
It’s silly to think that age doesn’t come into play when talking styling, we were all influenced by the environment in which we grew up in. It’s not an insult, it’s just part of what makes us unique. I’m 40 and grew up in the golden age of Japanese super cars, one of my perpetual wish list cars is a Z32 300ZX TT. I’m spot on in the target demographic for this thing. I just think it’s a fraud. Also I drive a sports car semi-daily, it cost half the money, is more special, and is faster. ![]()

Denise I wasn't trying to say "old people" ( haha) don't have styling taste just that maybe a more traditional taste.
I appreciate that Toyota gambled on the styling of the supra. I love the very wide hips I think its sexy as he$$. Alot of cars now are pretty much slab sided which in my opinion is very boring and safe styling. One of those things where you're not gonna make everyone happy unfortunately. And people complaining about co-producing the supra with BMW is crazy to me..BMW has great chaises and very tunable engines. Why not use them to help produce a sports car. Would've been better for Toyota to collaborate with KIA? |

As a 62 year old white male car enthusiast the new Supra looks like a dog's a$$ . The front is better than the back but this is just one picture . But I much prefer the rounder/softer lines of a Boxster/Cayman .
