I was going to post some updates on Aiken, but not after seeing those pictures.

My goodness. I know those places.

My sister and BIL live in Black Mountain NC. Its on the map above. They were here in FL last week and missed the storm. She tells me both of the bridges leading to there house off the main road are washed away and a good part of the road. If they had been home they wouldn't have been about to get out. Their house is OK but the entire area is f'd.

Mountains and tropical rain are a bad combination. The only precedent for this really was Camille in 1969. Mudslides here killed around 150 people.

Those pictures from Chimney Rock are heartbreaking.

Not me. Earthquakes, Fire, Tornado.... all are less predictable, little to no warning, and move fast.

I get 3 days to a week to prepare or evacuate from a storm.

That is horrible. I've ridden most of the roads in that area. I have a friend in Pineola that I haven't been able to reach.

My friend has a condo in St. Petersburg. He was lucky, the only damage was in the common area pool and hot tub. He’s on the bay right on the water.

Well, even those in the mountains, like my friends, but mud slides are a real threat, and without power, since they have a Well, not sure if they can get water without power, plus, they are in their 80s. This man is a Huge part of my Porsche history and education, having known him since preteens.

Best to everyone with relatives and friends in these areas. If you can't reach them .... power, infrastructure, etc. is likely the cause. Even this morning.... remnants are putting more H2O on areas like Morganton (local news) and showers west of here .... we don't need any more :(...

Hoping for the best for those impacted by the hurricane.

^^^It’s amazing that some houses look untouched, while the majority look like they exploded. I only take that to mean the standing homes were built better, to withstand hurricanes.

flatbutt 09-29-2024 06:57 AM

I can't help but wonder where all the wreckage ends up. A place like Chimney Rock that suffered near total devastation represents tons of debris. There must be a follow on ecological impact from all of that debris.

Here's one answer:

Does the state come and replace all the roadway or does an easement happen for the property owners to have a road again and more flood control for the future?
So many ramifications going forward.
How does the insurance industry stay in business with their current actuary models turned on their ear?

Great to hear 👍

Well, we dodged the main storm, but the latest NWS forecast calls for up to another 10 inches of rain on the eastern Blue Ridge over the next 24-48 hrs. We've already had 6+ over the last few days, so ought to get interesting.

stevej37 09-29-2024 02:09 PM

My younger sister lives in the very west end of NC...Franklin.
Roads are washed out...no electric...no cell service or cable.

The repair time for power....no estimate.

flatbutt 09-29-2024 03:49 PM

I'm hearing guestimates of close to $100 billion in property damage. Damn.

GothingNC 09-29-2024 05:50 PM

Hwy 70 in Swannanoa that is near the Arbnb I stayed at last week.

Horrible
