Wind is picking up here , news says it's the tail end of the storm curling around . Just a few more hours and she's gone .
|
In Jax we got some strong winds and light rain. No problem driving in this morning. Very few branches or trees down that I saw.
I grew up in Tampa about a 1/2 block off of Bayshore Blvd. With every storm I get to see my old stomping grounds on the Weather Channel as the waves crash over the sea wall. LOL |
Do you tie down the palm trees in containers, or are they gone now?
Father in law looked for his property for years. As a kid who grew up on the gulf coast, hunting, fishing and generally roaming around, he knew what would and would not grow where it flooded. Found a piece of property with the right flora and bought it. Cleared the property on weekends had a crawfish boil with a bunch of guys he worked with and framed the first house, finished it. He built the second house with his best friend. 50 years it has never flooded. I was there for a flood in 2001. Couldn't go anywhere for a couple days, Houston was shut down. Houses all around it got flooded, but I was high and dry, has happened a few times |
^^^ Lotsa places gonna be making the news later .... that weren't there decades ago... for a reason.
Live and learn/don't learn? ... or not. Mother doesn't care... |
We are all good here in Opelika. It looks like the hurricane went more east than expected. It is cloudy and rainy here and there is a slight breeze and surprisingly, it is 65 degrees here. I thought it would be more humid, but it is cool and feels great. The high today is 76.
Hope everyone survived okay and things get back to normal soon. Watching aftermath news footage, there is always some boat in the middle of a road and seems to always be a poor sailboat floundering in high surf. It's something so sad to see a sailboat floundering like that. It looks so helpless. [emoji3525] Sent from my SM-S916U using Tapatalk |
Friends here (HHI) are at their summer place in Cashiers, NC and last night a tree fell and came through the side of their house up there. Scary stuff! Just lots of debris here.
Park up the street next to the sound: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1727445742.jpg |
My sister's place in Aiken got hammered. Mostly the stable...I will organize all my gens and tools and head down if asked. The place we bought, 1/4 mile away, is untouched. The fam will stay there.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1727446468.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1727446468.jpg The amazing thing is that two trees fell, one missed by a foot and the other went through the stable breezeway and missed the apartment where my Nephew lives. His car has issues, however! Looking up at the stable from the ring. The appartment is on the right of the breezeway. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1727446929.jpg https://www.postandcourier.com/hurricanewire/aiken-helene-power-outages-roads/article_e8abe84c-7cc3-11ef-9fbf-1bdacb0d24de.html |

And she's gone :)! Totally dodged this one. Paul .... I might have to deal with some like those too tho' .... just not on houses ... good luck!
I'm about three storms behind... soooo .... I'm no help :D |
We've got some limbs in the yard and driveway - mostly were already dead. And wet grass - so no complaints here.

Lots of wind, not much damage, hell, I didn't even notice it last night, http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1727457326.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1727457326.jpg Had to get it down before the neighbors kids started checking it out.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1727457682.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1727457682.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1727457682.jpg Will finish the rest when I get a chainsaw. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1727458074.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1727458074.jpg |
All good in the Raleigh area, rain has stopped.
I have a few friends in Western NC dealing with flooding and evacuations. Lake Lure dam collapse is imminent. |

Lake Lure is simply a beautiful place. My goodness. |
Any sense, or reports, about damage to houses and particularly roofs from Helene, compared to recent big hurricanes, e.g Ian in 2022?
I'm guessing the track of Helene was the "best" possible in terms of population affected while the storm was still a hurricane? Some implications for FL's insurance market and other things of interest to me. |

whew! The Lake Lure dam issue sucks :( |
|
I just drove thru the above spot on I-40 last week. I-40 is now closed at the Newport, TN exit. Lots of flooding. Hwy 74 in Asheville is completely underwater.

I'm glad I'm not in a raft on the Nolichucky today .... |
Sun is out now we are good to go . Glad we escaped with no damage .
|
Just saw where the Walters Dam in Haywood County, NC failed and they are evacuating downtown Newport, TN. They are calling it a "Flash Flood Emergency".
