Get caught shoplifting...win almost $1 million.

The chief said the city decided to settle the suit to avoid further litigation and legal costs.

"Surgeons reattached Bates scalp, but the suit alleges she continues to suffer from headaches, memory loss and depression because of the incident."

I'll bet she never paid a penny for the surgery either.

Hopefully, the medical bills are $966,000, and the court is able to send that bit straight to the hospitals...

I also hope that the headaches remain for years to come.

It might be interesting to check back and see where she is a year, two years, five years from now. I bet she is far, far too stupid to make any real use of that million bucks. She will be worse off than she was before winning her little lottery.

Why are they training police dogs to scalp Americans?

Lost in the whole fiasco.....

According to Brentwood police, Bates, who was on probation, and two other women had stolen $10,000 worth of merchandise from the store and fled by car.

Nope, wasn't lost on me. Like I said, hopefully, her award is about equal to her medical bills, and hopefully, the judge can give the money directly to the hospital so she only gets a tiny amount

^^^ My bad...I meant the whole thing had shifted from the crime she did to the results of the chase.
Sadly, I wonder if she will get any punishment for the crime.

This is yet another example of our bureaucratic society, bean counters, deciding case resolution on the least expensive way out. All this does is encourage other criminals to do the exact same thing, hope they get roughed up, find some bottom feeder lawyer to file the case and reward the criminal for being a criminal. I am sorry, but if you are in the act of committing a crime or fleeing a crime and are injured as a result, you should get nothing at all.

30 years ago, I worked at a FLAPS. I had a buddy that was working at another store one day at closing time. Someone had hidden in the bathroom until after closing and while my buddy was counting the money with the safe open (and the other employee was outside dumping the trash) the thief held a gun to my buddy and demanded the money. My buddy had been in the Army and was on lithium for an issue. The guy with the gun turned his head, so my buddy grabbed the gun and shot the guy in the leg with it.

When the cops were there, they told my buddy that under those circumstances, you never shoot to wound, you always shoot to kill. If he had hit the guy in the knee and caused permanent disability, the guy would have been able to sue.

That was my thought. I did not click any links but I'm pretty sure that I know what case this is. The woman should be punished for her crimes but having police dogs attack people's heads and faces is problematic, to say the least. For all the people saying that they love the outcome, what if it was you or your kid getting bit in a case of mistaken identity? And yes, it happens.

^^ I agree. Shoplifting does not deserve a life changing wound.

Agreed, no one should suffer such a wound if all they did was shoplift.

But that's not all they did. They ran from the police, using their vehicle to ram the cop car in their attempt to escape. They then exited their disabled car and ran on foot, hiding in some bushes in an attempt to avoid arrest.

They had demonstrated a propensity for violence. She was hiding in such a way as to make it impossible to determine if she was armed or not. She refused to come out in the face of clear commands to do so.

So, yeah... This is basic "how not to get attacked by a police dog" material. Someone might want to make a supplemental video to the "how not to get your ass kicked by a cop" video.

There's a difference between someone trying to steal a sweater and getting caught and multiple people making an organized grab of $10k+ worth of merchandise, then getting in a car chase, then bailing out of the car and running and hiding in the woods. And if I had to make a guess, this is likely not their first time. They are probably career criminals. If they'd not gotten in a car chase. If they'd not bailed out and run and hidden, my guess is that she would have never met the dog.
