Today I learned about lithium battery fires

Thankfully, not first hand. Montreal had a container ship drop off batteries, container apparently caught fire, fumes wafting into residential areas. I know it is a nasty fire, decided to read up a bit and WTF! HF, as in hydrogen fluoride. Very nasty stuff, colorless gas, dissolved in water is hydrofluoric acid, used to etch glass. Easily absorbed through the skin, poisons you on skin, destroys lungs if you inhale the fumes. Wow, that is worse than I thought, I was thinking about lithium, not fluorine

A friend who is an Air Hostess/Hostie/Flight Attendant said they do NOT like to see beaten up looking cellphones on planes. She said if the battery is damaged they can start burning and that's not much fun at 5,000 feet

And when those batteries go, nothing is stopping them!

Imagine and explosion, rocket, and cutting torch all in one package.

Overheating batteries and even battery fires on board an airliner passenger cabin are more common than most think, they just don't often make the news. Unfortunately people are absent mindedly putting these things in their checked bags (in the belly of the plane). It'll be ugly if a fire breaks out in the hold and the plane is over the ocean.

Ah, throw a bucket of water over it. That'll put the fire out.

If it's something small like a cell phone and you've got a bucket full of water, you might not be too bad off. Just dump the item into the water so it's fully submerged. That's seems to work reasonably well.

Last week I was staying at a Hotel in NYC. I was getting in the elevator when another guest walks in with his battery powered scooter. I really could not believe they would let someone bring that up to their room with all of the fires we have had here with the batteries being the cause. Last time I will stay at that hotel.

I keep a good supply of lithium batteries for flashlights and small electrics. I store them in ammo cans.

I recently bought an RC truck to play with with my grandson's. In checking the batteries, my camera batteries are more powerful than the ones that came with the truck. The truck packs look cheesey compared to my Sony batteries, but I guess that's to be expected since one Sony is about half the cost of the whole truck package.

There's one viral video of that: https://nypost.com/video/man-engulfed-in-flames-after-lithium-battery-blows-up-in-elevator/

And entire container ships hauling cars becoming a fireworks show.
The solution is eliminate all possible water sources

Where there's a problem there's always a need for a solution.

I have an RC boat that has a brushless electric motor and is powered by a lipo battery. I have read that when charging the battery, I should put it in a fireproof bag. I've never done that.

I have it written into my tenancy agreement forms, no charging E-scooters of E-bikes inside the house. They can ignore that but if they burn down the house the insurance company will go after them.
